Although a little more young adult feeling than her Parasol Protectorate series, Gail Carriger continues to flesh out her Victorian Steampunk in a delightfully riotous way. It's also fun to see some familiar faces. A promising start to a series.
this was everything. god, it was so badass and witty and everything i expected and more. im sad that the rest isn't on audible but i will probably get physical copies real soon because my god, this was so good.
What an enjoyable romp! Unusual. Haven’t read a steampunk novel before. Will read others in this series.
I do not like to read about someone entering a school, of any type, and for the focus of the story not to talk much about classes! I want to know their skills, exams, instructors, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. I want to feel like I am attending! And I didn't get that.
I was also underwhelmed by the way the story was told. Too much known from the get-go and little consequence surrounding the main conflict. Made for a "meh" experience.

In general this was cute. I would describe it as light and fluffy. But I gave it one star because I had a serious problem with the black kid being named “Soap”. Especially when the explanation was that he was called Soap because “he needed it more than most”. Even though he is a sootie, I don’t think the name served any literary purpose. It’s also just inappropriate in a book for young readers.
I wasn't crazy about the Parasol Protectorate series, but this series is wonderful. I read all four books in four days! If you even only sort-of like steampunk, you'll probably enjoy this because of the characters. Sophronia as protagonist is pretty darn amazing, and some of the secondary characters are equally fascinating. Merry adventures on dirigibles, preventing robot takeovers, it's all quite exciting.
