I enjoyed this series with an explosive ending! It was endearing, fun, clever and plenty of twists. A strong female lead, plenty of supporting characters, lovely tension, copious amounts of serious frivolity and even some frivolous seriousness.
What a fun book. Steampunk, vampires, werewolves, finishing school, spy school. Just a fun light read. Sophronia has interesting adventures and I love the cast of characters. Very excited to read the second book in the series.
Really fun and interesting. I ended up reading the whole series in a week, back in February.
Fun, but very distracting character names.
I'll read the sequel and if I come along it, but I've been drawn in by other series a lot more

Doesn't quite know what it wants its world to be--cute, horrific, magical, technical, whimsical--but the finishing school Britishisms are fun nonetheless and the cast is pleasant by the end.
Fabulous middle grades steampunk! I am glad I read the Parasol Protectorate before this. The PP made EE so much funnier and not quite so far-fetched.
This is a Battle of the Books staple for NC and it's a really fun read. I highly recommend it if you enjoy steampunk or books about girls going to a spy training school disguised as a polished finishing school.

Sophronia is being sent to finishing school. Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality to be exact. Sophronia would rather be figuring out how things work than learning how to curtsey, but her mother has other ideas. Her mother would be appalled at what she is actually learning at Mademoiselle Geraldine's. Not only does Sophronia learn how to curtsey and act appropriately in social situations she also learns how to poison someone and the fine art of gathering intelligence. Her other skills come in handy when she and her friends must figure out what has happened to a communications prototype that is wanted by a lot of nefarious characters.
I like this Victorian steampunk world a lot. I have read Souless, the first in Carriger's adult series, but didn't really remember it a lot. This series is set in that same world. The school is a giant balloon that floats across the moors. There are vampire and werewolf teachers. And there are flying skypirates who attack the school. I found the whole thing fun and ridiculous and really enjoyable. There is just enough steampunk, just enough historical fiction, just enough zaniness to make this a really fun read.

this book is so fun and cute and did i mention fun?? sophronia (what kind of name is that actually like i kept expecting her to get some kind of nickname but she DIDNT) is such a cute chara my curious baby always involving herself in things she probably shouldnt. the plot is a bit weak but i think the banter and just how FUN it is make up for it. i honestly just really enjoy the victorian era steampunk setting and the concept of girls learning how to be "ladies" and spies at the same time.
