While I knew this series was related to the Parasol Protectorate, for some reason I'd imagined a sequel (perhaps Alexis's daughter and her friends), rather than a prequel. But I was delighted to find myself in a time when dirigible travel is still new, LeFou is still a child, and vampires/werewolves are only just beginning to be accepted in society. Overall a very enjoyable book, and I look forward to continuing with the series and learning more about Madame G's Academy and the sister (brother?) school for evil geniuses.
This book was really entertaining. I found myself flying through it, and laughing at all the ridiculous names. It did, however, feel a bit like a middle grade, and the characters were for the most part pretty flat and immature. It was an enjoyable and easy read , so overall I'd give it 3.2 stars.
So cute. Can't wait to get to the rest of the series. Perfect early teen book series.
I could see why a younger age group would like this book. I really like the premise of the book (steampunk!!) and think it is original. But, I wasn't really liking the way it was written because it seemed aimed at really young audiences; which sometimes I can roll with like Joseph Delaney's Apprentice Series. But not this one I guess.
I'm going to try her adult series instead.

Some of the terms and such confused me, but the language, characters, and plot were enough to help me pig on through. Good start to an interesting series; I'm looking forward to reading the rest. Would recommend.
I downloaded this audiobook based only on the title and the cover image, so I came into with almost no expectations. I didn't even realize it was YA fiction until the narrator mentions that Sophronia is 14.
I was pleasantly surprised and exceedingly charmed by Sophronia and the ragtag band of friends she puts together to save the day. This book is a very fun and fluffy adventure story that is easy to read in under a day or two. I would also highly recommend the audiobook as the voice acting was very fun and well-done.

This is one of my favourite mindlessly fun adventure series. It has everything you could want: a little romance, a lot of mystery, shenanigans, and espionage all wrapped up in a steampunk victorian setting. To start, this book has great world building. The questions that come up are either answered through the plot, explanation, or are inconsequential enough to be taken as fact and move on. I love learning about the supernatural characters like werewolves and vampires and their abilities that are unique to this author.
As for the characters, they are engaging, funny, and realistic. I know, that's an odd thing to say about gentry in victorian England who attend finishing schools to learn to finish others, but it's true. I could easily imagine having the same reactions as Sophronia to many (if not all) the arising plot points. The plot itself is intriguing and keeps me turning pages, even on my many rereads. It's not so much that I learn new things each time, but rather that it's written in such a way that I enjoy it just as much on the fifth read as I did on the first.

"I would recommend this if you enjoyed the Parasol Protectorate series, and I LOVE that you aren’t required to read that before starting this series. There is action, adventure, covert shenanigans…and a few paranormal beings sprinkled in for good measure. It is a fun read, and I like that this would be suitable for a younger audience as well – no romance, no language, minimal violence, etc."
