I only used the good bookshelves for this book :)
Here's a list of things I loved about this: Soap (the person, not the object for cleanliness), Bumbersnoot, mechanicals who can figure out if you're a boy or a girl (but can be fooled by gyrating dancing of pantsed individuals, comedic timing, and awesome vampire professors. ALL THINGS THAT ARE YOURS WHEN READING THIS BOOK.
Seriously, this book is so delightful that I am chomping at the bit for the next one. Steam punk is usually a genre that is just too daunting for me. However, after initial set up confusion, I was on board and fully engaged in this fun spy finishing school adventure.
I think this book will win 0 awards, but it will live on in my hand selling and shouting-from-the-rooftops crush I have on it. Thank God the next one is coming out this year-I hope it comes right when I need some fun because this one was undiluted in this nature! I am so pleasantly surprised and pleased with this book that I can't stop smiling when I think about it!

Very fun! I would have loved this as a teen reader; as it stands, as an adult reader who doesn't seek out steampunk, it was quite an enjoyable read.
Sophronia is a clever albeit difficult 14 year old girl in a steampunk version of Victorian England. She's constantly driving her mother and sisters batty with her refusal to act like a lady. But who wants to be a lady when you can take apart mechanicals and climb dumbwaiters instead?
When her family finally has enough of her misadventures, they send her off to finishing school to learn the art of etiquette. Little do they know, this school has a dual purpose. Mademoiselle Geraldine's teaches girls to finish and to FINISH meaning: always conduct yourself like a lady before you kill in cold blood. Sophronia begins to wonder... what exactly did she get herself into? And why is she enjoying this education quite so much?
I started this book with high expectations. The premise is intriquing, but the storyline doesn't really engage. I definitely enjoyed learning about the art of murder and espionage through the use of feminine persuasion, but the the writing just wasn't as exciting as it could have been. The world that Carriger has created is one that I would love to live in though and it's still worth a read. Recommended for middle grade and up.

Clever but ultimately forgettable, this steampunk novel has a compelling concept that I would personally rather see explored in a historical fiction setting. Although the series continues, I was satisfied with the ending of this book and unmotivated to read the next ones. I'd suggest this to a cousin or niece, but I am not sure I'll ever revisit this world.
This was cute and charming, but at the same time I cringed every time I read the one black character's last name: Crow.
Light, fun and flirty. Reading this is like eating ice cream with a few chili peppers hiding in the creamy goodness.
I loved the original series that this was based off of and thought that, surely, a spin off couldn't possibly surpass it. My goodness was I wrong. I completeley loved this book!! I can not wait for the next release. I await the hyjinx of Sophronia and company with baited breath!
This book was humorously charming and cute. I thought the steampunk theme especially the fact that the school flies was awesome. Well it is on a dirigible. There is a robot dog, robot maids and butlers also vampires, werewolves, and evil geniuses. This book has everything.
Plot: This book is about a girl named Sophronia Temminnick. She is a bit of a handful. Loves taking things apart, climbing, eavesdropping, and being an overall nuisance to her mother. Her mother finally fed up with it sends her to a school that makes ladies. Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality is not your everyday garden variety finishing school, no it is a school that teaches young ladies how to curtsy, dress, talk, spy, climb, hide, and assassinate. It teaches you how to be an intelligencer. While there Sophronia meets friends, allies, enemies, vampires, and werewolves. She breaks the rules, and she saves the school. I loved the plot. I loved how werewolves wore top hats and vampires greatest weakness was his clothes. I loved Bumbersnoot the mechanical dog turned purse and the steam punk theme of the story. There were places in it that were random but they didn't really detract from the story.
I loved the characters. Sophronia is a handful. She is spirited, speaks her mind, and is very clever. Most of the snooping and things that get her and her friends in trouble are her idea and she always manages to do it without getting in trouble. I love her band of friends Dimity is the snobby high-class daughter of evil genius parents who want her to learn to kill. Only problem is she faints at the sight of blood. Agatha is the overly shy and kind of dumb but cute sidekick of the group. Siedheag is the manly fighter who wouldn't know what being a lady is if it bit her in the ass. I can't stand Monique she is the I'm-better-than-everyone type. She back stabs, lies, and is just a plain bitch. The teachers were all quirky and all had there own little eccentricities. Actually all the characters had something that made them unique and fun to read.

3.5 Light fun, with lots of chuckle-out-loud moments. Sophronia is good character to serve as a guide for middle grade readers through the steampunk world of the Parasol Protectorate: a tomboyish Victorian miss who learns the value of both intelligencing skills and a proper wardrobe. But she hasn't quite got Alexia's style or wit, alas. She's surrounded by an interesting cast of secondary characters, including the younger incarnations of many of the key players in the adult PP books. Without the romantic tension of the PP books to keep a reader's attention, though, the lack of compelling plot becomes far more obvious here than in Carriger's previous books.
