It’s a fun book but I’m absolutely horrified that NOTHING happened to Apollo. He was knocked out for a day or two and that’s it?????? After all the horror he had wrought on the women he encountered?? After attempting to rape the main character AND getting his father to kill her?! He gets to be revived and continuing living his life with even more power this time around?? I was going to rate this 2 stars but the more I recall, the more horrified I become.
It’s really awful that there can be disgusting, horrible characters like Zeus and Apollo and instead of getting punished, they get REWARDED for their behaviour???
And worst of all, in the epilogue, one of the human characters who’s getting married makes a joke about keeping Zeus/ Apollo away from the bridesmaids like “ha ha ha we need to protect the bridesmaids from these serial rapists we have invited…????” WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?!
And lastly, what is it with this author remembering Black people at random times like the train of the dead? It was sooo weird 🙄

My, this was a fun read! Initially I was a bit skeptical: the writing was fairly flat and I wasn't particularly engaged with any of the characters. But the humor kept me reading and I ended up sailing through it and thoroughly enjoying myself. I came around to the main characters, and while the writing style wasn't anything memorable, I think it worked just fine for the novel. This is a light, fun read that took me less than a day to finish, and while I'm not likely to add it to my bookshelf, I certainly enjoyed myself.

This was a LOT of fun. In some ways reminiscent of The Eyre Affair, but it holds together better. Also reminded me a little of How the Dead Live, but I think that's normal for any book that deals with cheeky interpretations of the afterlife.

I love retellings/reworkings of ancient myths and anything to do with the Greek and Roman gods. There are many good ones in YA lit, but this was the first adult one I have stumbled across. This book was laugh-out-loud funny, irreverent, and really well-done.
The gods all live together in falling-down house in London, where nobody believes in them and their powers are draining. As they try to recapture their former glory, certain humans inevitably get hurt in the process (as is always the case with human-god interactions).
There is definitely room for the author to do more with these characters in further books, and I hope she does.

It's a little cringy and clichéd at times but makes a feel-good and easy read

What happens when Greek gods and goddesses share a place in modern day London?

Artemis is a dog walker. Apollo is a TV psychic.

Aphrodite moonlights as a phone sex operator. Her ring tone is the 80s song "Venus".

Dionysus owns a nightclub and is a disc jockey.

All of the gods and goddesses find their powers waning in modern times. Two mortals, Alice and Neil, find their meek, quiet lives turned upside down after a chance encounter with Apollo.

I thought this was very humorous. It was a bit smutty at times, but keep in mind how smutty the greek gods and goddesses were back in the day.
