I wanted to like this book but the writing is not great. The most interesting part of the back story was wasted early on when the author violated the first and most often taught rule of writing. "Show Don't tell." In the first chapter the main character's interesting back story is told in a three paragraph info dump. That back story was far more interesting than anything that happened in the first 150 pages.

The story has very uneven flow often caused by a story device that gave me a headache. While it might be good science to have all the spaceship to ship communication delayed by distence, it made the story super clunky and distracted me.

I picked this up for $2 bucks in goodwill and I thought it sounded fun. Maybe the further books got better but I think the author was not ready for prime time.

Some of the writing was so repetitive that it was tedious to read. I really like the premise and the characters. They could have been developed a bit more, but I did care about them in the end. I don't think I'll continue reading the series, but it wasn't completely awful. There were enough good points to keep me reading til the last page.

One of those series of books that I've seen for years and yet never picked one up.

Enjoyable enough that I'll give it a couple more, enough twists in the tale to keep it interesting for a few books.

Sort of Battlestar Galactica fleeing from an enemy fleet, but without the the Cylons, just different human groups at war.

It is fun read. On one hand, Black Jack Geary self-examination was interesting and helped tell the story. On the other hand, it seemed like there was too much of a good thing, thus I found myself looking for the author to get on with the plot. I will probably read the second in the series.

DID NOT FINISH

Wasn't bad but couldn't/didn't get through it. Made it maybe 1/4 through.

Solid, entertaining military sci-fi. I didn't love this, mostly because I found the characters to be quite stock, especially the main character, but I really like and appreciate the premise, and I'm hoping that the series and characters grow over the series. The concept of a bright, but normal, soldier whose story has been turned into a legend provides a framework for several things: what can be learned from history; the problems of the present; the future effects of sustained fighting; and the perennial pissing, politics and propaganda of humans. That said, I had to intentionally suspend my disbelief, because Geary is basically the time capsule guy from Idiocracy, except in his case tactically and morally superior to after 100 years of human evolution rather than more intelligent.

Good hard scifi. Great battle sequences. Other than hero, characters are dumb as bricks. Handwaved away but unbelievable.

Not a character book. Read only for combat.

Good start to what looks to be an interesting series. I listened to the audio version, and found it a fun listen.
