I didn’t really have expectations for this book as military sci-fi is really quite far from what I usually reach for. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
I thought it was a really interesting concept - someone who died and had been remembered through history as a martyr, coming back 100 years later unconvinced they’re deserving of that status.
It was interesting that Geary remembered enough to be of help, whilst there were still new technological advancements - it meant there were things not too unknown for him to teach whilst they weren’t so common others would expect them.
There were some good characters, some of whom I was constantly second-guessing.
I knew I was enjoying this because I wanted to pick it up. It’s very easy to passively listen to an audiobook, but I did want to find out what was about to happen so I read it in three days.

Black Jack Greary is back

Such a good book. I originally borrowed this book from my college library years ago pretty much solely because of recently rewatched Divergent and the name "Dauntless" caught my attention.
This book has almost 0 in common with those. In fact, this book is more like a science fiction retelling of the Odyssey with some King Arthur thrown in to boot.
Captain John Greary, Black Jack to his allies and enemies, has recently awoken from a long hibernation nap to discover that the war that had begun when he "died" is still going. And then he's thrown into command to bring the fleet home. Unfortunately, he can't take the short way home. Half those under his command have major hero worship for him. And the other half think that he's not living up to the Black Jack legend.
So, he's got some problems. Including some problems of the general "being pursued by the enemy" variety.
I remember loving the book the first time I read it. I did not remember how funny it is. And the fact that the author legitimately knows what he's talking about with military matters? Didn't know it before but I love knowing it now.
Seriously. We're going to go back to the funny. Greary's humor is dry and when he has a moment to let himself not be the most stressed human in the fleet, is also warm and flickering. Like a candle. The man needs a nap too but he doesn't get to have one yet. Furthermore, Greary reminds me a lot of Commander Shepard, specifically from Mass Effect 2 or Mass Effect 3. And a little bit of the Sole Survivor from Fallout 4.
Just a phenomenal book. Did it end kind of abruptly? Yes. But also, I didn't notice I'd even gotten near the end. I was that engrossed in it. Because Greary is utterly compelling.

I pounded through this whole series in a short period of time. I really enjoyed it. The thought of a long war causing such change that when a hero from the past is revived his thought process can not only win battles but lift moral. These were all enjoyable.

Not my type

As my title stated my taste on this book. I’m no fan of a sort of inner thoughts repeatedly. Plus, I think the beginning was rough and need a good polish. Even with the politics with the “fleet”, it is too weird. It doesn’t sit too well with me. And the whole generational difference is too dumb, especially in military maneuvers...if they can build a starship. Then they better know how to do a maneuver. Otherwise, just stay on the damn planet.

This started out okay. I liked the story idea. But it lacked the human element that's missing is most of these space operas. Some people love this type of book. My husband is one. I, unfortunately, am not. So, there's no love from me for this one.

My first audiobook. Strange at the beginning, especially the female lines been spoken by the male reader, but go well after some time.

Straightforward military scifi, if you like that sort of thing. A lot of battles and underdeveloped characters. I read the whole series in one go, so it was entertaining. Although the writing gets marginally better, I found the plot to be pretty repetitive.
