This was an interesting read, it had its moments where I was throughly engaged with the story, but it felt.flat at times when there were battle engagements overall 3.5 stars.

I enjoyed this book overall, also loved the set up for ideas that I hope come to fruition later in the series. Battles were easy to follow which was a big plus.

Note, I did this as a audible book. Only issue I had was distinguishing between main characters inner voice and spoken parts.

A promising start to what to becomes an excellent hard scifi series. The moment Jack Geary says to the Syndic commander simply, "No." is the embodiment of this kick-off volume. I've gone back to that bookmark and number of times for a re-visit into this universe. Beyond this book it only gets better as the series continues and even splits into three Series. Highly recommended.

I really liked this but not as much as Mike Resnick's Starship series. So I'm still debating with myself whether this is 4 or 5 stars.

Jack has been in a rescue pod for a century. Recently woken, he finds himself in the middle of a situation where the enemy has assassinated all the experienced captains of the fleet.

Added notes on book #4

Very solid military science fiction – some Battlestar Galactica vibe, and lots of space combat. The combat is well done, I enjoyed how the information delay plays out. The distances are light minutes and the speeds slower than light, so it takes minutes before information comes in. That's an interesting challenge for a fleet commander.

The rest of it wasn't all that hot, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to continue reading the series.

A sort of homage to a pastiche of [author: Glen Cook] and [author: David Weber] that adds in the Reluctant Hero Smarter And More Moral Than Everyone Else And Always Does The Right Thing. This is not an improvement.

A minor officer thought to have heroically sacrificed himself in a major battle in space is discovered one hundred years later in a lifeboat capsule, and shortly thereafter becomes head of the fleet in a dire situation. The usual space battle scenes follow (points to the author for remembering that information propagates at most at the speed of light, even in The Future), followed by the usual fleet training and maneuvering wankery, followed by the usual new and improved fleet kicks butt wankery.

I'm not really impressed; I might pick up the next book in the series, but only if the library has it or something and I'm out of other books.
