"I have a feeling about most books that at some point somebody would have written them anyway. But then there are some writers without whom certain stories would never have been written. I don't mean the subject matter or the narrative but just the way in which they did it—their slant on it is truly unique [...] With Faulkner there was always something to surface [...] The point is that with Faulkner one was never indifferent."
—Toni Morrison, from the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, 1985

I think I'd need to read this book fifteen times to get everything out of it. (And it would be worth it.) I'm glad to have read it this time during the height of a cruel heatwave, with only a fan in my ivy-choked window to circulate the thick, dead air.

I feel some Morrison creeping up in my queue.

There is no denying that William Faulkner had immense talent. But Absalom, Absalom! is so dense. I struggled to get through it from the first page to the last. I often found myself venturing to SparkNotes in order to grasp the storyline at all. The sentences are so long and thick and frustrating. The story itself is so very dark and joyless. I just couldn't fall in love with this piece of literature.

What a masterful work - a story of such mythic proportions! I can't aptly sum it up; this is a "read-it-and-understand" novel, so I hope you do just that!

This is literally one of my favorite books ever and it made me want to fail all my classes and sit in my room reading it over and over. Masterpiece isn't a word to use lightly, but I think this book is deserving of it. It's not an easy read, not a "fun" read, and definitely not for everyone, but it's really really really unbelievably good and moving. Since I finished it, I've had like a dozen dreams set inside Faulkner-esque landscapes, which should show you how hard it is to get this book out of your head.
