By the definitions Goodreads assigns to its star ratings, I should give this book five stars for "It was amazing". However, I am not, because even though it was, I have such a love/hate relationship with it.

About 20 pages in, my thought was "Oh Faulkner, where have you been all my life?" However, about 100 pages later, there were days when I would look at the book and think "Oh Faulkner, I just cannot handle you today".

There were passages that were as good as, maybe better than, anything I'd ever read. And there were times I would realize I'd read for pages without comprehending, and didn't have the energy to go back and try them again. There were times I loved that Faulkner would just casually drop a bombshell into the middle of nowhere, and other times I could only think "Wait, what? Can you just not?" And I quickly learned to tolerate not being quite sure who is talking or even what they're talking about. Mostly.

Ultimately, this was a book that required a tremendous amount of intellectual energy (and, I admit, a dictionary on hand at all times), and was utterly infuriating when I was not willing to expend it, but rewarded me greatly when I was.

Adding this to reread pile despite not really being into it the first time around. Maybe I’m just mad I couldn’t finish Go Ahead In the Rain

This was a very hard book to read. Hard! Apparently in the first chapter it tells you the entire plot but Faulkner needed another 340 pages to explain that first chapter. I can see why it's considered one of the greatest American books ever written and I'm very happy I read it. Means I don't have to read it again. But seriously, very good academic book that would be great to study. Not your Sunday afternoon, about to fall asleep, light distraction type of book though. The cider has been earned I think.

Fica a sugestão: go faulkner youselves.
