I’ve read this book several times over, twice for different university courses and then I don’t know how many other times just for pleasure. The seemingly endless sentences and descriptions of the southern heat draw you in to the books atmosphere. The imagery is incredible, I also have the audiobook and sometimes I’ll listen to it because it paints such a picture and is soothing. However, beyond the descriptions, the actual content is not soothing and definitely spooky.

Story as a multiplicity of stories. Reckoning with history. Faulkner paints history as a nightmare from which the reader must awake—the nightmare of the Old South.

Reading Falkner is akin to getting a personal trainer who thinks it wasn't a good workout unless every muscle in your body is screaming out in pain. I have a love/hate thing with Falkner in that I hate his books while I'm reading them because his train-of-thought is so non-linear and his run-on sentences are epic in their scope to the point where you forget where the statement began by the time you get to the end of it, and I love when I've finished a Falkner novel because it really does give a sense of accomplishment akin to finishing a marathon that you were forced to run in your bare feet. I once had an English professor who said that "Falkner is meant to be re-read", and I can agree on that to a degree because the first time through Absalom, Absalom I was exhausted and didn't really get what the point of it all was, but the second time, knowing where the story was going, was much more enjoyable. It's no Light In August, but it's a fairly good (if not hard-to-read) story. The saga of the Supten family is both shocking and amazing in its scope. That said, however, I don't think I'll ever be re-reading this one again.

I am not a huge fan of Faulkner. I understand how he is important, I just don't like his style (paragraphs and sentences that go on for pages).
