A really great story, feeling like a darker, adult version of the elements of ATLA meets the academic magic boarding school of Harry Potter. I could not guess any of the plot twists and turns. Eagerly starting the next book in the series.

Started this right after finishing zodiac academy and was worried I wouldn’t like it as much but was pleasantly surprised! The world building was easy to understand coming from ZA and I thought the main FMCs were very likeable. LOVED the little nod to ZA with Everest naming the lizard Blue 🥹🥹
I was hooked early on and it felt fast paced, and was SHOCKED by the ending!

I was tempted to give it 4 stars because of the absolute insanity and gut wrenching hurt this book left me with, but overall I think it’s more of a 3.5. And that’s okay. Some of my favorite series of all time have had 1 (sometimes 2 or 3) building books and it’s made it all the better in the long run. It seems like the twisted sisters are building the foundation with this book and I am so excited to be here. Admittedly, I have never been on the cliff hanger of one of their books and I don’t know how anyone did it, because… help. I am unwell. UNWELL.

CAYDE? I knew it was coming. I knew it was too good to be true and a lot of what he was saying was SUSPICIOUS. However, I wasn’t expecting him to kill her besties. For a minute there I thought she was going to perform healing magic out of pure desperation or on accident, but that didn’t happen, and now I am devastated. A lot of the betrayal tropes I’ve read are characters lying for the greater good who turn out to actually be on the right side of things. Or they’re forgivable actions. But following through on the kill… oof. This hit me like The Serpent and The Wings of Night and I’m still not sure if I’m over that one.

I know I said this with ZA too so I’m fully prepared to eat my words, but I don’t know how I’m supposed to ever forgive this man. He killed her only friends and family… I… how do you come back from that? Gut him, Vesper. Besides, Bastian has entered the chat and if this isn’t the start of a mating bond, I don’t know what is. Although he is hundreds of years old… I assume they live longer, but I am not sure if we ever got information on that? I did get the impression that they don’t live significantly longer than normal life spans (in comparison to other fae stories), but that could be me making an assumption.

Anyway. Everest and Kaiser… this is DELICIOUS. I’m SO amped for this. RIP Harlon. Sorry buddy. Not sure if becoming a reaper means you’ve lost your soul or something, but it doesn’t sound like things are not going to have a happy ending for you

I feel awful that I’ve had to DNF this book but it was just painful for me to read. I LIVE AND BREATHE Zodiac Academy and the Solaria universe so I did have high expectations.
I just couldn’t take anymore. It took too long to actually get somewhere and it just felt so repetitive.

Love the twisted sisters but just had a bad experience with this series. Love that other people have enjoyed it though!!

"Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony." Sorry that's a different series. Jokes aside, this is a great book in the universe that I already love. In the beginning it didn't click for me that this series took place in the Waining Lands of the ZA world, but once you know that it makes more sense. I love all the little ZA references, and I'm excited to see where this goes.
