Holy cats, I finished it! I do believe, at 982 pages, that this is the longest book I've undertaken except for textbooks.

I can't imagine being the author and sifting through the staggering amount of material Churchill left behind, because he always knew he'd take a part in British history so he saved all his correspondence. Lets not forget the 37 books and all the articles submitted to newspapers, plus his speeches. So pulling off a book of this magnitude without getting bogged down is a major undertaking.

For the most part Roberts succeeds. I did feel the book got a bit bogged down during Churchill's Wilderness Years which is why I couldn't give it 5 stars. I knew more about Churchill than most people before picking up this book, but I found myself amazed at just how many things Churchill accomplished in his lifetime. He should be considered the greatest person of the 20th century.

Give yourself a month to read this tome. I did it in 9 days because it was due back at the library, but I felt I could have enjoyed it even more had I not felt rushed.

Quite a compelling biography. The first third was rather slow, and at times there were long (unnecessary) lists of names. But overall it gave a great portrait of a singular, great figure of history.

Finally finished this one. Alternated back and forth between physical copy and audiobook. What an exhaustive and riveting account.

“Keep buggering on.”

In my 2nd year living in London, I worked for a company located at Buckingham Gate. I got off the tube at Westminster and I'd look at Churchill's statue every morning. Like most of us, I've heard about him as a legend, a man that lived many lives and did the unthinkable.
When this book came out, I got it straight away and even though it took me a year to read it (the lockdown year) I had a wonderful time learning about Churchill, his early years, and most importantly his most prolific years leading the empire on the battle against Nazi Germany.
It is incredible how this man had such an incredible calling since he was young: he would save the UK from a massive threat and he would be on the frontline. For over 7 decades, Churchill made mistakes, traveled the world, fought in wars across countries and smoked/drank ungodly amounts of whisky and cigars.
I loved the narrative of the book, the details, the warmth, and respect towards one of the most fascinating figures of the XX century.
