2.5-3*. Not exactly a literature classic, but was entertaining. I picked this up because this author wrote 24 books in this series, so I suppose there had to be something appealing in here. And yes, seeing how Tarzan was raised by apes was fun. The "romance" with Jane was ridiculously cute. I could see this being the huge fan fav of young adults swooning over his adventures. I had to suspend my disbelief that Tarzan was able to teach himself how to read (seriously?), but yet never heard nor could speak a language. Still, if you want an escape into a jungle from the safety of your couch, swing in the trees, pull pranks on the aborigines, learn how to be human, and stick it to the bad guy, you'll enjoy this jaunt. I would definitely recommend for a preteen as a great adventure story, and if they like it, they can follow the tale for many books to come.

All machines were down at work today and this was the only book I had access to…I wish I would have just found coworkers to talk to instead. Feels like I wasted my time
While this was not my favorite, it had some definite high points. I can see why there have been so many film adaptations (many of which I completely adore). It is such an intriguing idea that that maternal instinct will take over no matter the species of the mother or the child. I also really enjoyed ERBs writing style, I had heard from many that they disliked his style saying it was racist and sexist but I disagree. It definitely has elements, but there was no differentiating between the races, to Tarzan, the white men and the black men were these creatures he had never come across. I thought his reactions and thoughts were so interesting, especially when his human instincts would contradict his natural "Ape" instincts. I was completely enthralled by this story. I especially liked the scene where he discussed cannibalism between humans versus animals. My mind was blown by his intellect.
Also shoutout to Tarzan who was able to teach himself to read. WOW. I couldn't help but laugh when he could write clearly but he still had no idea out to speak the language. D'arnot was quite possibly my favorite character in the entire novel. I loved the way his friendship with Tarzan progressed. It did seem a little too easy for them to make their way to America and track Jane down. But, maybe D'arnot knew more about Jane and her father than originally thought! Who knows! Overall, I would say this is a solid read. Well deserving of the praise it receives!

As a teenager reading the Tarzan books back in the '60s, I wanted to be Jane and go live in the jungle with the strong, silent Tarzan. Tarzan was an adventure that took me completely out of my time and place and set my imagination free. It was a hoot!
It's hard to imagine (pardon the pun) that Tarzan lasted as long as he did without sexual urges. Think about it.
