Largely I really enjoyed this book. Rin is an interesting character most of the time, and there's a lot of cool worldbuilding and cool events throughout. The characters mostly develop nicely, and we see quite a few interesting twists that change things up but aren't totally out of nowhere, which is normally my preference.

Something I didn't know until shortly after I started reading was that this uses the Sino-Japanese war around the WW2 era as its basis. Something I didn't know until I was most of the way through was how much of that war is replayed in this story. Check the content warnings for this book if there are topics you might be worried about, because that war covered a lot of bases.

My main issue with this book is that sometimes the cliches smack you right in the face. There's some rough whiplash between a fresh fantasy story based on Chinese history, explicitly not shying from the hard parts, and a generic story about a peasant girl being a genius and finding she has powers and stuff. Rin herself tries to shirk these cliches with an at-times terrifying personality, but they're still pretty much front and centre in the way the plot progresses.

Still, really good book. Definitely going to pick up the next one.

War doesn't determine who's right. War determines who remains.

This book is absolutely EPIC. We follow Rin through her journey from war orphan to an aspiring soldier in Nikan. R. F. Kuang has masterfully woven together a fantastical world with the reality of militaristic Japan and its 20th century relations with China. The threads of history work so beautifully with those of Kuang's fantasy, and that may be the best part of this book. War, sacrifice, revenge, culture, it's all so well done. The first part, Rin's experience at Sinegard, was definitely my favorite, because we got to know Rin so well as a character. But the others were captivating in their craziness; while I feel like we skipped out on some important scenes
(especially Rin's relationship with Altan)
, these may have been cut by ruthless editors looking to shorten the text, and even so I was so enthralled by the story that I honestly didn't care much. I can't say much that hasn't already been said - this book is dark, yet absolutely incredible.

I'd rate Part I 5 stars
I'd rate Part II 2.5 stars
I'd rate Part III 4 stars

This was a really good book, then it shifted genres unexpectedly (to me), then got me into the genre. Honestly, Part I was amazing, super unexpected in an author's first book. Looking forward to Book 2!

If you can handle the content warnings, then I highly recommend this book! I have a BA in History and I appreciate the historical inspiration that the author uses in this work! I can clearly tell where they were inspired and how they worked their writer’s magic to transcribe it into their book. This book was magical in the explanations and themes that related to actual events in history. I also appreciate the magic world in the book and the explanations that are overviewed throughout the entire series. My teacher’s brain thinks this would be a wonderful book to use with mature high school seniors and any college student. I NEED to finish this series!

This book is very dark, and though it may seem as a YA book in the first couple of chapters, it really isn’t. Please check out the trigger warnings thoroughly before choosing to read this book.

These are the things I reacted to during my read/listen to this book, but there are more trigger warnings!
Drug use, addiction, self harm, racism, war, and VERY graphic descriptions of how people died, including children, experimentation on humans.

This book is dark, very dark. And I liked it. This is my first ever adult fantasy that I’ve read, excluding new adult. And I don’t know if all adult fantasy is like this one, or this is an exception. But it was like nothing I’ve ever read before. You get attached to a character, only for them to be removed from the equation. Either permanently or temporarily.
The hardest loss for me, personally, was Altan. He was the second person that I allowed myself to get attached to, apart from Rin’s master. I’ve just started on the second book, and I’m looking forward to follow Rin more!
