Wonderful story that lovingly reveals the better and lesser qualities of human nature: love, racism, usury, friendship, and how we deal with aging and loss. Mica is a young attractive professional from Israel, accompanying her difficult grandmother to Warsaw, Poland to see about the titular "property" that had belonged to her grandmother's family. Through a series of misdirects, Mica finally comes to understand that her grandmother, fearful after the loss of her son (Mica's late father), has come to Warsaw to confront long dormant feelings for Mica's real grandfather, a Polish man that had stayed in Warsaw after Mica's grandmother was sent to Palestine by her aggrieved parents to have her child as an unwed mother far from the prying eyes of their neighbors. Every character in the book is, in turn, given a chance to be heroic and to demonstrate human foibles. Rutu Modan has delivered a wonderful story.

Beautiful and complex. You see the layers that are interwoven into our humanity, the strong story accompanied by illustrations full of expression. Definitely worth reading again!
Heartbreaking in many respects, jaw-dropping in others (how can humans be so insensitive?!), but overall a story of gaining a better understanding of our family.
Yes yes yes. Moving characters, the holocaust, Israel's relation to the world: it doesn't get better.
I wonder if I am only able to read fiction if it comes in a graphic format these days? Or, if I am listening to it I suppose. Reading fiction is just so difficult for me; I don't know why. Anyways, this story was rather intriguing and the art was beautiful to look at. The story follows an elderly woman traveling with her granddaughter from Israel to Poland to check in on a property that her family owns. There's romance, and a mystery, and family drama, and kind of a henchman character that keeps you on your toes. The other fascinating element for me is that the book discussed a cultural event like Dia de los muertos that happens in Poland in the cemetery where loved ones visit those who have departed like Latinx cultures. Fascinating stuff, a really fun read given the heaviness of the geography and historical trauma explored in the book.
