A heart wrenching and hard hitting collection of poems about refugees, identity, and womanhood. Standouts are Home, Midnight In the Foreign Food Aisle, Backwards, and Bless This House (excerpt below). Pro-tip: consult the glossary in the back of the book.

Mother says there are locked rooms inside all women.
Sometimes, the men—they come with keys,
and sometimes, the men—they come with hammers.

No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark [...] You only leave home when home won’t let you stay [...] No one would leave home until home is a voice in your ear saying—leave, run, now. I don’t know what I’ve become.

Love is not haram but after years of fucking women who are unable to pronounce your name, you find yourself totally alone, in the foreign food aisle.

Goddess of absence, Holy Mother, Our Lady of Leaving Children With Strangers, patron saint of the babies will raise themselves

If the moon was Europe, my father was an astronaut who died on his way to the moon.

My mother said there are locked rooms inside all women. Sometimes, the men - they come with keys, and sometimes the men - they come with hammers.

Really lovely poetry. Obviously, I was a sucker for the recurring religious motifs and the exploration of immigration and home. Warsan Shire has a very visual way of writing and many of her poems felt like they told an entire story in a few lines. Many of her poems are short, but manage to pack a punch anyway.
Some of my favorite poems include: “My Loneliness is Killing Me”; “Home”; “Photographs of Hooyo”; “Joyride”; “Backwards”; “Bless this House”; “Bless our Blue Bodies.”

And at the same time, it is the only body you have

“The sun is perfect and you woke this morning. You have enough language in your mouth to be understood. You have a name, and someone wants to call it. Five fingers on your hand and someone wants to hold it. If we start there, every beautify thing that has existed, and will ever exist is possible. If we start there, everything for a moment is right in the world.”
A complex and thoughtful poetry book, well worth the read.
