Lyrical and heartbreaking at points, yet also filled with such love, a depth to crawl into alongside the poet.
This collection was certainly stronger than Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth though its first half is impeccable, whereas the second half abruptly feels like just more of Teaching. There are even poems recycled from previous collections, just titled differently, and recycled imagery that I wasn't a fan of before comes back even stronger in Bless the Daughter.
Warsan Shire is still a powerhouse writer. Cultural and political themes presented--which many poets our age feebly try to weave prose around with regurgitated, superficial imagery and buzzwords hammered into the reader's skull--are concisely searing, unforgiving, and palpable in Shire's writing.

I'm sooo glad this gem has been nominated this year, and the Chicago Public Library has a copy.
Mother says there are locked rooms inside all women. Sometimes, the men—they come with keys, and sometimes, the men—they come with hammers.
If you read this, don't be dumb like me, who didn't realize there was a glossary until halfway through.
Very interesting. A little relatable. I have to admit, I didn't understand a lot of it, but the glossary in back was helpful.
