This was stunning and very very moving. It always fascinates me when an author manages to convey so much through such short poems.

I don't want to do a disservice to the poet by trying to force myself to read something that is beautifully written but not for me right now.
A powerful, ownvoices collection of poetry that emphasizes the immigrant experience through a feminist lens. I loved listening to this on audio narrated by the author and can't recommend this collection enough, especially if you're looking to try something new for National Poetry Month. These poems ripped my heart out. It is incredible that women so far from you can live such similar experiences. There are many words and titles I had to google to understand the magnitude of and what they represented but others that I lived with her that tore at me to relive them. I saw myself, families, parents reflected so truly in her words. Though many experiences of immigrants, refugees and women seem universal as told through her poems the ones uniquely to Warsan are written in a way that is a window into her life. I loved these poems even though some times I had to put them down and cry through some of them before being able to continue.

Such a beautiful, brilliant, heart-wrenching, inspiring collection. These are poems of ache and loss and belonging and home. Poems of pain. Poems of joy. Poems of love and awakening. There's so much to smell and taste and gaze upon here. So much to sink into.
Shire's writing is clear and evocative. She paints moments of trauma and violence so succinctly, sometimes with such a sucker punch to your chest. I love her work and I'm so happy to have this full collection finally. It's one I will return to.
