I was really hoping to enjoy this book, but it ended up simply being very much not for me.
I was not a fan of the writing style (the characters read much younger than they actually were).
It involved interesting ideas and themes but the execution and writing is what killed it for me and it started to feel like a chore to finish ):
Perhaps if I reread it at a later date I might enjoy it more, just writing this review because I want to explain my low score ! I don't think it's an objectively bad book, just didn't gel with me personally.

Charming, full of heart, quirky. I wasn’t immediately drawn to the story, but after the first 10-15 pages I couldn’t put it down.

This should've been middle grade fiction. The main character acts like someone just entering adolescence, not like someone who's about to head off to college. And the tone is all over the place - the story bravely confronts tragedy and unfairness, but then completely shies away from moments of tension, especially during the climax, where quips and jokes repeatedly undermine the suspense.
The familial badassery, the ghost-waking, the prehistoric Underworld...all interesting and well-executed. A villain who heals patients by transferring their wounds to someone else? Also great. Everything else feels messy, disorganized, and out of place. Especially the vampire and faerie stuff.

That said, the author clearly has promise, and I hope she keeps practicing to better her craft.

This is a Young Adult book so it’s not expected that the characters will be complex. But the characters seem to think and act in a way that makes them seem much younger than they are
