I really enjoyed this magical world infused with ancient magic and monsters. Elatsoe was a great young adult character who drove the story along with her lovable ghost dog Kirby. It took a little bit for me to get into the book, but once I hit the 20% mark pacing picked up and I flew through this! 🫶🥹

A solid story with really good writing. The dialogue and plot can feel a bit simplistic at times but hey, you come into a YA novel with different expectations. The worldbuilding/lore is very interesting and memorable and I really appreciated the celebration of Native culture in this book. I enjoyed reading this from start to finish! And a massive plus for Rovina Cai's gorgeous art.

This is a great YA mystery novel with some unique world building. I really enjoyed the characters and learning more about the world and magic system. The mystery had me interested and the way the twists were revealed had me either only one step ahead or completely surprised. Some aspects were quite predictable but I think they were done well anyway. The teenagers are written like teenagers which is great for realism but had me rolling my eyes at them sometimes as an adult reading this. Overall a great book which I recommend reading.

Full transparency- I don't normally read this genre. Just wanted to give it a shot, and this one had promising reviews.

That being said, this book sucked hard. The characters were flat and predictable. The storyline was all over the place, with a bunch of random themes introduced without any buildup or cohesion. The dialogue was insufferably lame.
It did have an interesting twist to it, but the remaining 98% of the books sucked so hard it didn't land well.
