I thought I was going to love this book, but I just ended up super disappointed. It felt like one long scene that was never ending. I love that the MC is aroace, but it was barely referenced. There is also some representation with indigenous elements incorporated throughout the story, which was my favorite part of the book. I really wished the plot was as exciting as the last three chapters. I love the main character, but the rest of the story doesn’t portray itself as an exciting avenue. Kind boring. :(

this was fine. there were a lot of flashback scenes and storytelling scenes, some of which I liked, some I didn't like. the overall mystery here was fun and I liked how it was solved

I actually really enjoyed this book at the start but as I kept reading I found I was enjoying it less and less until what could have been a four star book turned into a 2.5.

This book has a really interesting premise but its bogged down by uninteresting characters that, despite being 17, act like they’re 12, inconsistent world-building, and dialogue that made me cringe every few pages. Not to mention the mystery gets solved out of nowhere with little to no real information gathered by the characters.

This book seems like it couldn’t decide who it wanted it’s audience to be; the plot and level of violence is well suited for its intended young adult audience but the dialogue and characterization felt very much like it belonged in a middle grade/children’s book.

All that being said I don’t think Darcie Little Badger is a bad writer by any means, there is definitely the makings of a really good book here but it just missed the mark for me in too many ways. I hope she continues to write because there are some really great ideas in this book that make me excited for what she might do in the future.

2.5/5

The beginning felt a bit slow, but it really picked up near the end and I definitely cried once or twice.

I was okay with the worldbuilding--honestly, I wanted more though. All the pieces that were shown to us were utilized to come together in the end, and that was nice, but I was definitely hoping to see and experience more of the world. It felt restricted in this sense.

There were a couple spots that really captured my attention with the scenework and I loved that. Would have loved a few more spots of that too.

The characters were fine but it took me a while to really connect or fall in love with any of them, unfortunately.

I did love how the magic elements worked together and, like above, wished there could have been more of that.

This was a good story, and if there is to be a sequel, I hope we really do grab onto the potential this world has and delve deeper into the different magics that weave it together. <3
