I imagine all wars look the same to those who die in them.

Snapshot:
The classic Wonder Woman that we know and love has gotten a makeover in the last few years, and this book is yet another unique take on the Diana Prince story. The idea of a young Diana before she really comes into her own, both her immortality and her full power, is interesting to read about. The entire story shows the sensitive, vulnerable side of Wonder Woman as she ventures into the world to help a young girl, Alia, who was never meant to live to seventeen, as she’s destined to destroy the world. If you want to see a whole new side to Wonder Woman, I recommend this girl-power story.

Deep dive:

Any time you read a superhero book, there are certain expectations that you go in with. I expected a lot of action, epic drama, mythology (particularly Greek mythology as it’s Wonder Woman), and a touch of romance, but I was still really surprised by the direction of this story. There was so much more to Wonder Woman: Warbringer, than your standard superhero-saves-the-world classic; there was warm and funny dialogue and a cast of characters that you really came to care about.

In this Wonder Woman remake, Diana Prince is living on the island of Themyscira, where she has yet to transition to full immortality and feels inferior to her sister Amazons for not yet proving her worth. During a race, Diana sees a fiery explosion and goes to save any survivors, risking banishment from her home. In the wreck, she finds Alia, a young girl targeted for her doomed destiny. After saving her, the island of Themyscira descends into chaos and Diana learns that her act of mercy may spell doom for the humans and the Amazons. As it turns out, Alia is a warbringer who brings death and destruction wherever she goes.

Throughout history, there have been warbringers who preceded every major war in human memory, dating back to the Trojan War, sparked by warbringer Helen of Troy. The only way to stop the cycle of war, is to travel to Southern Greece, where the original home of Helen lies. Accompanied by Alia’s friends Nim and Theo, and her brother Jason, they set off for Greece, all the while being chased by terrorist/murderers bent on killing Alia, with only brave Diana and their friends to stand in their way.

Diana was flawless, a little uncertain, a little awkward, but all in all exactly what you would expect from a daughter of gods and Amazons. However, she’s by no means arrogant, as she’s still discovering exactly what she’s capable of. The best part is that her friendship and caring for Alia is exactly what pushes her to try harder and expect more of herself in her quest to save her life. Alia is the shy, awkward daughter of millionaires, who recently died in a car accident. (Alia will often wonder throughout the book whether her warbringer abilities led to the argument that played a role in their accident. Sucks to be her, huh?) Alia truly grows into her own, more confident in herself and her abilities, thanks in part, to her friendship with Diana. GIRL POWER, AM I RIGHT? Nim and Theo are both great comic reliefs throughout the tense and dramatic journey. Side note, Nim truly is unique and hilarious.

I have to be honest, I 100% shipped Theo and Alia, and Jason and Diana. I mean who doesn’t love, love? As with most YA novels, the success of relationships are 50/50. While Jason seems like an unlikely match for Diana, he actually has powers of his own as a descendent of Greek heroes and kings, meaning they’re on much more equal ground. Theo and Alia, are the typical younger-sister-in-love-with-the-brother’s-friend story that we’ve heard so many times before, but I rooted for them anyway. (Without spoiling any major plot points, I can’t say what happens, so you’ll just have to read yourself!)

THE ENDING WAS SO MUCH.Bardugo stepped up her game for the ending with a surprise twist, as the deadline to doomsday rapidly approaches. I never saw it coming, and that’s my favorite kind of surprise, where there are no hints to give it away. The last few chapters are a total rush as everything seems to go downhill very, very quickly for our heroes, and it’s a little hard to keep up. But overall, the themes of friendship, feminism, and bravery left me excited to check out the other books in the series with remakes including [b:Catwoman: Soulstealer|29749098|Catwoman Soulstealer (DC Icons, #3)|Sarah J. did not expect those last few pages. whew

Great addition to Wonder Womans/Dianas' story! And great start to the DC Icons Series. Can't wait to start Batman!

Sisters in battle, I am shield and blade to you. As I breathe, your enemies will know no sanctuary. While I live, your cause is mine.
.

A fun book with an amusing back story for Wonder Woman’s origin. Great characters with villains emerging when least expected. Mix of legendary figures, gods and emerging amazing skills and abilities…

Fun read

Following an independent storyline in an alternate universe from the movie, this is an excellent origin story featuring a teenaged Diana. The Amazonian princess risks exile by rescuing a mortal—only to discover that the mortal is a warbringer, a descendant of Helen of Troy with the supernatural power to destroy the world. This is a marvelous tale of adventure, female friendship, girl power, mythology, and just the teeniest bit of romance. I listened to the audiobook, and it’s fantastic.
