I was pleasantly surprised by this superhero origin story! Themiscyra comes alive in the beautiful descriptions and we learn about Diana’s experience as a young woman. Some of the women on the island love her, while others look down on her. But she has the choice to save someone - Alia - and she takes that chance, knowing it may be the end of the world.
I love the mythology, the relationships, and the twists.

This book was not what I anticipated. Yes, I realized it was not going to be like the movie. No, I did not realize that it would not be in the same timeline/plot-line with the movie. However, that does not mean that I did not thoroughly enjoy it. Diana Prince is an endearing character that I found myself laughing aloud at. The people she happens upon throughout her journey-Nim, Alia, Theo, and Jason-are rounded out people that I want to know more about. Again, Leigh Bardugo outdid herself.
Fast-paced with fantastic characters! This was a great adventure.
Rating: 3.5
While I wasn't always super into the overall plot of the book, I did thoroughly enjoy the writing style of Leigh Bardugo, as I always do. She brought out the grace of Wonder Woman, rather than focus on her abilities.

Well that was pretty spectacular. Can't wait to read the rest in the series!
This was my first Leigh Bardugo read and I was not disappointed.
This is the story of Diana before she became Wonder Woman, when she was just the Princess of the Amazons wanting nothing more than to prove herself to her sisters and mother. After witnessing a shipwreck Diana brings Alia, the only survivor and a mortal to Themyscira, the island of the Amazons. However, Alia also happens to be a Warbringer, someone who will bring about chaos and destruction to the world of man if she lives but if she dies the threat will pass until the next Warbringer is born. However, there is a third option that will save Alia and bring the line of Warbringers to an end.
I loved this group of characters. Diana is Princess of the Amazons and one of the POV characters. The other POV character is Alia, who is the Warbringer, she is also really nerdy and loves science and while I liked Diana I preferred reading from Alia’s POV. Nim was my favourite character she’s sassy, strong and feisty. She’s a designer and shows that fat girls can be glamorous too. Jason is Alia’s brother, he raised her after their parents death and he is very protective of her. Theo is Jason’s best friend.
I love how strong these characters are and how they continued fighting no matter how scared they were. I absolutely love the friendships in this especially that between Diana, Alia and Nim. I also liked that while there was a little romance in this it was not a big focus of the book.
I love how diverse this book is as Diana is the only white woman, Nim is Indian, chubby and she likes girls (questioning whether lesbian or bi), Theo is Brazilian and Jason and Alia are black. I also liked that she didn’t shy away from talking about privilege and race throughout the book.
The writing throughout this is great and I loved the action scenes, the pacing was a little slow at the beginning but picked up as the book went on and the ending was pretty explosive, I did not see that plot twist coming. I also loved the Greek mythology sprinkled throughout.
My only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more of the Amazons.

I paired this with the graphic novel so kept pace between the two. Whether 1 chapter or 6, I read novel / graphic novel. I really liked the story and, as LB says:
"I'm grateful to the Superfriends for introducing me to Diana over soggy Saturday-morning cereal, and to Lynda Carter for cementing my love for Wondy forever."

I’m trying not to let my love for Diana make me give this more stars than it deserves.
It was super, super slow. The plot twist just didn’t seem right. And that romance seemed a bit... forced (which I guess we know why now huh?).
However, I did love the characters. I loved the fighting scenes. I genuinely wanted them to succeed on their mission. Anything to do with gods and goddesses and I’m on it. I even got to learn a little bit about some of the gods/goddesses, which is a plus. I’m excited to read the next one!
