It dragged for me and it's hard to enjoy when I know Bardugo can write such amazing things. This wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.

I don’t normally enjoy superhero books (even though I do like movies) and I’m not a huge fan of DC in the first place lol, so that would explain why it took me about 7 years to finish this. BUT I met Leigh shortly after this book came out and got my copy signed so like, I felt a great compulsion to read this book. Also, I have a poster of WW on my freaking wall between my bookshelf and my bed, so I kinda have to look at it everyday. It came in the book so it’s like staring at me and saying, “READ ME.”
3 stars
Although I did find Wonder Woman enjoyable, it wasn’t my favorite book ever. I didn’t necessarily have any big problems with this book at all, I just didn’t find it that gripping. I wasn’t drawn in as I would have liked. Annnnd I found myself skimming the last 100 pages or so. Yikes. #imsorry
What I did like:
Okay so FIRST OF ALL, I read this after I read the ancient poets for school (Homer, Virgil, etc.) so the whole Helen of Troy and gods vs. man thing was something that I found interesting when reading this because I actually knew the source material. I appreciated the amount of research Leigh did for this book and how much of it is based on mythology that already exists. Which is A+++++ amazingness because said ancient poetry doesn’t do a great job at empowering woman BUT THIS BOOK DOES and it uses other great writing that doesn’t to do so, SO HA. Pointspointspoints.
All of Leigh’s characters are addicting, and this is the case here too. Alia was my favorite, hands down. Nim and Theo were both hilarious in their own manners. The interactions between the characters is what made this book for me.
This book has diversity but I mainly want to point out that DIANA IS TALL. And I know it’s shallow to go #yesfortallrep but lol, she is tall and I can relate. All of the female YA characters are pale and petite, but DIANA IS EPIC AND TALL AND TAKES UP SPACE IN A GOOD WONDERFUL WAY.
Friendship! Female friendships! Female friendships where said females don’t compete over boys! But boys are our friends too! Friends yay!
The writing as per usual was wonderful.
What I felt more “mehh” about:
Honestly Diana was a bland character for me. Wonder Woman in general is. She just seemed really…perfect. I like my characters more messed up (like all of Leigh’s other characters.) BUT I did like seeing Leigh write an entirely different character than what she’s use to. And at the end, Diana is a good person and someone that I think a lot of people should look up to. She’s fiercely loyal, and I did enjoy how she encountered “our world” so to say for the first time. It was both hilarious and eye-opening. She sees things in a child-like manner in the sense that she’s honest and innocent in her reactions to certain things. It’s beautiful, and I love her for that.
Okay so that first one is really more of a “like” than a “dislike,” but what I felt more “mehhh” about was the plot. It moved somewhat slowly for me and wasn't overly complex like I’m use to or would want in a book. This is more of a preference of course, not anything that I would deem as “bad” in this book. I found it predictable and somewhat dull.
So in the end, I do like the characters and their friendships. But I was bored for a good portion of it otherwise. Still, glad I read it but I don’t think I’ll be too eager to read the other DC Icons books. Mainly because their superhero books and those aren’t really my thing. Oh well.

this book was amazing. I liked how this book was very true to the origin of Diana but still had a bit of spice.

i really enjoyed how this book opened up with her on the island. from my limited knowledge of the movie, and we start with Steve on the island but in the books, it's alia. she's a descendant of Helen of troy. Diana is more insecure in terms of her standing on the island with her family, as Helen is making the island self-destruct. anyways, alia goes on this mission to save her with the help of her brother, Jason, her best friend, Nim, and Theo. they are trying to go to the springs to break the curse while having the world hunt her because descendants hurt the world.
i really enjoyed the scene at the fancy gala where they escape on the jet. it was so fun and it reminded me of the scene in the movie where Steve and Diana go to the fancy dance, and I enjoyed it.
so this book had good moments especially with nim being the driver and just her comedic timing. this book was so diverse as well with Jason and alia being half black, nim being Indian. it was great stuff. anyway we get to understand the journey, and the crew really becomes quite close. we hear about alia having this huge crush on Theo, and how he said she looked like "buried treasure" and his brain turned to mush when she was in the gold dress at the party. did anyone cry bc I did.
okay, Jason always seemed very very sketchy to me. his entire relationship with Diana just wasn't vibing with me. like yes we saw how he didn't like the truth rope on him, but i didn't like Diana having a love interest. she's better on her own. he seemed like he had outside motives, and when we found out he wanted to remake the world, allow people to die, and create a war to bring people together to fight the monsters was... Jason was disgusting, and it sickened me that he wanted to live on as a fake legend ugh. it's good that Diana defeated him (even after she died) and came back to life to free Theo and nim. a powerful scene was when she tricked Jason to carry the burden of the amazon. he then goes on to say how she was his first kiss, and she's like "you were my first nothing, Jason" I am immortal, and you are a footnote. I will ease you from my history..."ugh beautiful girl. we love you.
I really liked the friendship between alia and diana because it started with them being a bit hostile and stubborn. then, they became so trusting on one another. like alia trusted diana with her entire life and knew that she was going to save her from the curse. I just think that's deserves acknowledgement because I love a good female friendship in books.
the book ends with diana having the power to go back to the island, alia being with Theo and being happy and nim having a girl. I liked how no time had passed on the island, and the oracle believed in her yess.

I would probably give this book around 3,5 stars. I liked reading it and it was definitely entertaining, but it wasn’t perfect.
I loved the feminism and female power in this, as well as the strong friendships.
The first chapters were a bit hard to read, though, because Diana’s decisions seemed not understandable (why choose a stranger over family members?), so they really made me question the main character. But this got better after a while.
Also it was obvious that this book is aimed at teenagers and there were a few scenes where I thought they really weren’t necessary. For example that one romance scene made me cringe...

Such an amazing portrayal of Wonder Woman as a character, was instantly hooked on it.
