A lot of nostalgia over these characters. I didn't want it to go quite so far into the future, though. Many of the beloved characters from the first book end up dead (often through old age, but still it's a lot.) Overall, it has the sweet, hopeful feel despite the challenges of the world that endeared the first book to me.

A little hard to get into at first, but it gets better.
Loved the characters and how the story unfolded in various time settings. Great narration, also!
If you enjoyed reading Fannie Flagg's Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, nearly 20 years ago, you will love this chance to revisit many of the same characters. Bud Threadgoode is featured first as a young boy growing up in this bucolic town up unto the town's demise when the trains stopped coming through. There are plenty of stories about his mother Ruth and Aunt Idgie, his daughter Ruthie, and cousin Evelyn. I listened to the audio version narrated by the author, and it was a treat to hear her voice some of the same words and phrases I heard from my mother and grandmother growing up. This is a dear, dear story. Not much action, just a lovely tale of returning to your roots.
A solid, light hearted read with beloved characters.
The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop by Fannie Flagg is the sequel of the popular Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. The problem with sequels is that they rarely live up to the original and unfortunately this is the case here. I am going against the grain on this one because it looks like most reviewers are extremely fond of the new novel. But to me it seems that the author wanted to squeeze one last drop from a well-loved cozy story. This book is an update of the lives of the characters in Fried Green Tomatoes, mainly Bud Threadgoode and his quirky relatives. While it was fun to catch up, it quickly became uninteresting. Cozy fiction is usually Fannie Flagg’s forte but this was too much charm and not enough style. The first story was original and entertaining, this one lacks substance. Please remember that this is only my opinion. Thank you to Random House Publishing, NetGalley, and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Wonderboy of Whistle Stop, the sequel to Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Frannie Flagg. It was just as precious as the first. Oh my gosh.
So, our main characters here are Buddy Jr. AKA Stump and his daughter Ruthie, but they do follow around some of our favorite faces. We get to see old Idgy living with her brother Julien in Florida selling fruit and Honey and basically being a rad old lady. Dot Weams still does her monthly newsletters into old age with everyone who left Whistle Stop, which is no more at this point. We get to follow Evelyn Couch's journey of success after her beautiful friendship with Ninny Threadgood. We even get to meet a ton of the current generation of kids coming down from the OG Whistle Stop crew.
Honestly, Fried Green Tomatoes was beautiful and didn't need a sequel but I'm so happy with the cute that is Wonderboy that I'm happy she wrote one. Also I'm sentimental and I love seeing what else happens to familiar characters. Thank you to the Libby app for the audiobook! Narrated by the author herself.

What a great little trip back to Whistlestop. Some of the book drove me nuts (like the MIL from Hell, the daughter...also from hell & the super unbelievable part that a nurse would give out info to any random person who called a hospital. But other than those things...it was a fun book. Now I need to re-read the Fried Green Tomatoes.
Just the cutest!
If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes... read this- starts off weird, but go with it!!
