3.99 AVERAGE

More like a 3.5, almost 4.
Lovely to hear more about the Threadgoodes, but can't really compare with the first one.

More like a series of brief essays about former and new Whistle Stop characters than an actual book. There really isn't any sort of storyline until well past 1/2 way through the book. Definitely not on a par with Fried Green Tomatoes, but somewhat entertaining.

Jumps around a little at first. However, once it settles in, you feel at home no matter which characters you are with in the moment or what location that part of the story is set.

An incredibly heart-warming sequel to the 80s classic 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe'! I devoured this beautiful book in one sitting!

Last year I reread [b:Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe|9375|Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe|Fannie Flagg|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1165961740l/9375._SY75_.jpg|2129359] so I could refresh my memory in prep for the sequel, The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop. I was a bit hesitant to start, as I usually am with sequels, so I was happy that I got to my audiobook a bit late. Even as I started the first two chapters, I wondered if I would feel the same endearing nostalgia I felt with the first book. Thank gawd, soon I was smiling as I listened to Fannie Flagg read about Bud as a child and Bud as an adult. We meet his daughter Ruthie, who is middle age in present day. Oh, and Evelyn Couch makes appearances so it definitely did the first book justice. I liked that we still visited Whistle Stop back in the days of Idgie and Ruth, but we also go to know what happens from 1980s onwards. I did miss Minnie but that also made the characters feel more real. Time moves on. As I neared towards the last pages of the novel, I started worrying how it would end. I think most fans will like the ending as it's so Fannie Flagg, and it made my heart happy. I am longing to watch the movie again so I will need to do that soon. I wanted to visit the books first, as they really take you into the characters' lives and story. If you have not read the first book, I highly recommend reading that one first, or a lot of this book will read like a secret you aren't in on.

3.75 rounded up. Given the name of this book, I thought it would focus more on Buddy Threadgoode. Instead it covers several characters and time frames. I listened to the audio and sometimes forgot which time frame we were in because it switches back and forth so much! There are several stories recapped from the original book in the beginning and it makes for a slow read to start. Overall it was enjoyable to see where all the characters ended up in life and the ending was sweet.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this delightful and overdue sequel to one of my favorite books. Good to be back in Whistle Stop for a few days.
