I just love Fannie Flagg and this sequel to The Whistle Stop Cafe is another novel of hers with heart-warming characters.

In this story Bud is the star, but there are also many other characters who delighted us in her original story about the fictitious town of Whistle Stop, Alabama.

I highly recommend you read The Whistle Stop Cafe before reading The Wonder Boy, as the background knowledge will make the book so much more enjoyable. I hadn't read the original for many years, but saw the movie within the past 5 years, so it was all still fairly fresh in my mind.

The original story was a strong 5 stars for me as I fell in love with the town and it's characters. Even though this didn't touch my heart on quite the same level, it was still a really good, fast read that kept me engaged throughout the story.

Every bit as good as Fried Green Tomatoes (well...close)! Please, please, please let it become a movie!

So nice to revisit Whistle Stop and find out what happens to all the characters! A few inconsistencies from the original (for example, Ruthie is called Norma in the one scene with her in the first book, and her husband is named Mackie, not Brooks, and her daughter is Linda, not Carolyn), but overall an enjoyable read.

A nice little visit in Whistle Stop. It was nice to go back.

Very enjoyable and I continue to love all her characters. The plot wasn’t my favorite, that is only reason for lower rating.

If you love Fried Green Tomatoes and wondered about how those characters continued to grow this book is excellent.

With Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café being one of my favorite books, I was excited to read this one and it did not disappoint. It was beautifully written and so wonderful to read about the characters old and new and take a trip back to Whistle Stop. Of course it also made me cry a lot, just as Fried Green Tomatoes does whenever I read it. Overall it’s a wonderful book.

DNF the audiobook at 3:30. It was on track for a 5-star review until a clumsy attempt at a life lesson for Buddy came at the expense of a fat woman gospel singer. Flagg really dug in about how she took up the whole doorway, needed 2 stools, took half a pie to go, and was the fattest woman anyone had ever seen. She was the fattest fat who ever fatted apparently.

Give it a rest, Fannie.

P. S. To those wondering if we're going to call Ruth and Idgie's relationship what it is—As of the 3:30 marker the closest we get to the word "lesbian" is "special friend".
