Heartwarming and sweet but everything was so tied up in a little bow, it felt unrealistic. I think this author was going for comfort and idealism though, so it worked. It was nice to be reintroduced to these characters and re-invited to the old-fashioned town of Whistle Stop again. The book handled the passage of time including death and aging quite well.
It’s a little too sanguine but it was fun to come back to those characters.
This might have been more fun for me since I just read Fried Green Tomatoes and the Whistle Stop Cafe last year. It was like catching up with old friends and finding out the rest of their life stories.
This is the wholesome book I needed in my life right now. Full of heart and as believable as it isn’t.
I absolutely adore anything that Fannie Flagg writes. "The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop" is no exception. I couldn't put it down, and I thought about it all the time! I love the little tie-ins to her other books and the way she flashes back and forth in time. She's laugh-out-loud funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming all at the same time. It's classic Fannie Flagg.

Opening a Fannie Flagg book is like sitting down to visit with an old friend. I have been a fan of Ms. Flagg since Coming Attractions and of course knew and loved the characters from Fried Green Tomatoes. This book catches us up with the future progeny of the original Whistle Stop and does not disappoint. I hope we get another book about these folks. I’d love to read more about Alberta and Big George and Sipsey. Bravo!
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is my go-to comfort book, and I knew that I had to read this unexpected follow-up. Nostalgia always plays a big role in Flagg's books, and it works well for me as a longtime reader. Even minor characters feel like real people, and Flagg manages to give us updates on many of our favorites from the FGT as well as tie ins to other characters from other books, such as Minnie Oatman. Although life has its sorrows, Flagg always manages to make you feel positive about the overall outlook of things by the end of her books, and this one is no different. I'm sure there's plenty to pick apart, but honestly during this time when the world has felt pretty topsy turvy due to Covid-19, I have no interest in swearing the small stuff. If you are a fan of FGT, then I highly recommend this book to you.
There are times you can come home again, and The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop brings us back to Whistle Stop, Alabama and back into the lives of the Threadgoode family. The focus is on Bud "Stump" Threadgoode and his daughter Ruthie along with remembrances and encounters with Ruth, Idgie, Ninny, and Evelyn Couch. It took a bit to find the heart of the book, but once Evelyn enters the picture the heart and magic of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is back home between the pages of this book.
This book has the same feel of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. We get to catch up with a lot of our friends from the first book...Bud, Idgie, Dot Weems and many more. It is such a feel good book that you cannot put down!!!
