An endearing book about some beloved characters and some sweet new ones, but if you are here hoping for more details on the great love story of Ruth and Idgie, this ain’t it.

A sweet continuation of the fried green tomatoes story. I loved how it wrapped it all up!

I was so excited when I saw Fannie Flagg was putting out a follow up book to Fried Green Tomatoes. I watched the movie many years before I read the book. I have since watched the movie many times (and who am I kidding... I am totally going to watch it again after reading this book!).

The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop brought you back to so many of the beloved characters from the first book and sort of caught you up on everything that has been going on since then. The book carries over in to 2015 but hops back in time to the 1930's from time to time.

For the first 20% of the book, I was enjoying the trip down memory lane but wasn't completely sold that I was going to love the book. But I couldn't bring myself to abandoned these long loved characters so I stuck with it. I'm so glad I did. By the end of the book I was laughing out loud and crying happy tears as I sailed along a wonderful, albeit "Hallmark Christmas Movie" worthy, plotline. Does the ending jump the shark a little? Sure. Do I care? Not at all. Sometimes we just all need a happy ending.

If you are looking for a feel good book reminiscent of your favorite Hallmark Christmas movies, but don't want to wait for Christmas... pick up this one. It's a fast read and it brings you back to the "good ole' days" where people were all still nice to each other (for the most part)!

I was a little apprehensive about this book at first, because I absolutely adore Fried Green Tomatoes and was worried this wouldn't live up to it, but I'm so glad I picked it up. Going back into the world of Ruth, Idgie and the Whistle Stop Cafe was just wonderful, and getting more of an insight to other Whistle Stop residents was just lovely to read. With short and sweet chapters jumping back and forth between and 1930s and the 2010s and years in between, it was a quick and enjoyable read.

A wonderful journey back to the town of Whistle Stop! For a full review, check out my blog here: https://fairytalesandtea.com/the-wonder-boy-of-whistle-stop/

Charm coming out the ears! Wonder Boy deals with much lighter topics than Fried Green Tomatoes but still retains the warmth of the original characters. I adored Fried Green Tomatoes when I read it for the first time last year (and subsequently fell in love with all things Fannie Flagg) so it was a pleasure to return to the world it created.

It’s typical Fannie Flagg, and perfect pandemic reading if what you crave is happy endings. It brings a lot of people back from the Whistle Stop café and extends their lives forwards to 2017, which means that in that time frame a lot of the original characters have died or will die during the book, but usually not so sadly but at the end of a long life well lived. It hops back and forth between various time frames – 1930s, 1970s, 1990s 200s and almost to the present which can be confusing. I did need to check which decade I was entering with every chapter. It is predictable in that you know that everything will work out well for the main characters and the rare baddy will get his comeuppance. Almost too much of a happy ending. Really? That’s really going to happen? Well, yes in Whistle Stop it can and will. A good read and right for the times.

Sweet and light and old timey...it felt like a wholesome escape from dark times.
