The FMC in this is absolutely insufferable and I can’t stand her. I didn’t get very far but not even the creepy synopsis can save this for me

I devoured this book and just couldn't get enough! From the horror element to watching Sarah slowly go mad to seeing the mystery unravel, I was totally into it!
Black Wood house was creepy and almost a character itself. I loved the descriptions and how the house basically rebelled against being updated.
Sarah was such a complex character and I loved how her secret past was revealed in bits and pieces. It was so hard to tell if she was an unreliable narrator (she was always drunk and definitely losing her mind) or if the house was truly haunted or if the townsfolk of Beacon were just tormenting her. I always love a good story about an influencer and while this was such a small piece of the book, I did still enjoy that aspect. I also loved that she was a therapist so we got her self-assessments as well as seeing her visibly decline.
I loved that we got different formats for the narration. For example, we heard from different characters and we also got blog posts, social media posts, and news articles. The way information was conveyed and the non-linear timeline really captured my attention and piqued my interest.
If you love a good mystery/thriller with horror elements, this one cannot be missed.
Thank you to Ballantine and NetGalley for the copy.

Please, stop harming animals in books!!!!!! I’m literally so over it. I can’t even enjoy the book when I know an animal is in danger. It doesn’t make your book, or the anticipation better. I will never give an author a 5 star rating if an animal is harmed in any way. Sorry, not sorry! That being said, this story had a lot of potential, but felt a little unoriginal given the film “Taking Lives”. I really liked all of the twists revealed in the end. I really was hoping it was more spooky/haunted. But overall it was an easy, quick read.

This book was so crazy!!!! I’m so paranoid about living alone now. I didn’t see the ending coming at all wow
This thriller has some spooky/horror elements. Sometimes I really liked this book and other times I found it annoying. Unreliable narrators aren’t my favorite.
Creeped me out a little so a good start to spooky season
This was marketed as gothic, which made me a little nervous. But I would call it more of a “light gothic” as it wasn’t too creepy or gory. Sarah and her husband buy a murder house in a neighborhood where they are not welcome. Sarah is convinced the house is speaking to her and telling them to get out. The secrets of Sarah and her husband slowly unfold as the stress of this move and circumstances weigh on her. I found the ending a little lackluster.
I really thought this would be a 5 star read for me, but the ending ruined it all. I signed up for a supernatural book, but ended reading about a house that has a leak, a freaking leak. Yeah, okay when they did the inspection the didn't find anything it got me into thinking, but rlly
