Do yourselves a favor and don’t go trying to see how many pages this is and accidentally catch a glimpse of the author’s note. I spoiled it for myself, albeit I don’t think the author should have out this in such a viable place, but if I hadn’t, I would’ve rated it higher. Interesting take on the haunted house story

Sarah is a therapist and self-help writer. She also just bought a gorgeous past, with a not so pretty past. People have been murdered in her house. She got it for a great deal and is excited to renovate it. While she’s making the renovations, she plans to blog about it and get some social media points.

Things quickly become a nightmare. Nothing is going right. When Sarah’s cat ends up sick, she thinks someone is out to get them and is sabotaging their efforts. Something things to be making noise in the attic, and strange things are happening. Can Sarah figure out what is going on before the house gets the last laugh?

Ah this book! I love a good psychological thriller and this one did not disappoint. I wanted this one from the moment I read the blurb, and it lived up to all the expectations I had in my head. I am shocked that this one is a debut, it was really well written. There were a few plot holes that I was shaking my head on, but nothing major. I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to read this one in one sitting, because it is completely bingeable. I loved the twists; they kept coming right up until the end. They kept me on my toes and wondering what was next. I enjoyed the haunted house in a small-town setting; it was a lot of fun. I also loved that while I hated the main character, I couldn’t wait to find out more about her.

If you are looking for an utterly bingeable psychological thriller, then check this one out.

Thank you so much to the publisher, Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine, Bantam and Netgalley, @Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I loved trying to figure out what was going on in the book. I was so disappointed in the ending/explanations though.

Book started a little slow and was a tad predictable but it did have some cool twist in there. Didn’t hate it but didn’t love it. It’s worth a read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this one! I went in completely blind - knowing nothing about the plot. I think that was to my benefit. I didn’t know where the story was going the majority of the time and kept telling my husband my theories as I was reading, all of which ended up being wrong.

The pacing was fast and the story kept me at the edge of my seat. There was one evening that I had to actually put the book down because I knew I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep if I kept reading!

If you liked The Shining and/or The Amityville Horror, this book will be right up your alley.

I’d say go in blind and enjoy!

Very creepy and engaging read that had me spooked several times. My only minor complaint is that I didn’t love that the audiobook narrator actually screamed out lines when the characters were screaming. It hurt my ears!

The book was definitely a thriller that gave me nightmares for a few days, but it just wasn’t one of my favorites. It’s a quick read with few characters to keep up with. I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters in general but I think that’s the point of the book…to have a bit of distaste toward them.

I think my favorite part was the end with the notes from the author. Lisa Matlin gives a beautiful portrayal into mental health struggles and how to find help.

damn, what a debut book that Lisa M. Matlin wrote..
