3.5 stars rounded up. I loved parts of this book and in the end had to crash through the last 40 or so pages. But overall it’s hard to describe how I feel about it. The end was hard for me to take and it didn’t grab me overall until the end. But it was a good read. I think my issue is it *should* have been a quick read but just wasn’t. I wasn’t drawn to pick it up to find out what was happening next. Great idea but just not quite fleshed out enough to get lost in, maybe? But if you do read it, be sure to read the author’s personal note at the end. Incredibly important.

The Stranger Upstairs is a debut novel. It’s a psychological thriller that I could not put down. Told by a completely unreliable narrator, this book took me for a ride!
Sarah Slade and her husband have bought the Black Wood House. A notorious murder house where 40 years ago there was a horrific murder-suicide. Sarah and her husband have plans to renovate and then sell the house for a big profit. But perhaps the house has other plans.
This book has some horror, some mystery. It’s told in a multi-media format that uses journal entries, texts, and blog posts mixed into the narrative. I really enjoy when a book is written like that because it propels the story.
This story is told from Sarah’s point of view through most of the book, then shifts to another character’s. This is my biggest complaint because I don’t like when authors do this. That’s a personal preference but it doesn’t do anything to enhance the story for me.
Overall, this is a solid first story from this author and I’ll look for more of her work in the future.
Thank you to #netgalley and @bantambooksuk for the advanced e-copy of #thestrangerupstairs.

oh my GOD !!
okay for a debut novel this surpasses expectations, i am so impressed.
i feel so bad for joe, he’s caught up in all of the craziness that is sarah/lizzy and he’s too scared and anxious to do anything.
emily, poor emily. her death had me wanting to rate this lower than 5 stars but ultimately i didn’t do it. she did not deserve what happened to her and i am so sad about her ending. i wish we saw her escaping )-:
reaper is baby. i love him so much and he can do no wrong. i am so glad he recovered and im really happy that despite everything going on, sarah/lizzy cared for him.
i wanted to see jeff johnson BURN. why is he so MEANNNNNN !!!!
sarah/lizzy was so unlikable but it worked right up until the end. once she got away with killing emily, i didn’t like her anymore. she gives joe goldberg vibes. i even felt bad for her for awhile, especially once she started losing time.
so, at the end of the day, this was a haunted house story. the house is trying to keep people out. or is it janet? because we never find out what happened to her.
the authors note made me happy, i honestly never find these very memorable but her note was wonderful.
overall i’m really impressed with this debut novel and i hope we second a sequel !!!!

This was a quick read. It was entertaining while reading but probably won’t remember much about it. It’s definitely a good book to read during spooky season.
I loved this! Unreliable narrators get me every time. :D
Reaper was my fave character, and I loved the disdain that built throughout for our main character. This kept me hooked from start to finish!
