Jane is an aspiring writer living in Maine with her science-obsessed father. She's grown accustomed to her life, but one hurricane and her favorite author moving to town change everything. Jane has to navigate new friendships, deal with her mother's engagement and plans to take custody of Jane, and learn the secret of good writing.
The inspiration from Jane Austen is obvious, and there are some parallels in the stories, but the focus on passion, writing, familial relationship, and environmentalism makes it unique. While there is some action going on in the story, it's very character- and relationship-driven...and some of the relationships might surprise readers!

Delighted by this MG novel! Jane is a precocious sixth grader determined to become a writer. When a famous author visits her small Maine town, a hurricane, an obstinate boy, and Jane's Hollywood mother combine, not even Jane can guess the ending.
lighthearted
This was such a wonderful middle grades read. I devoured this book in a day!
First things first, this five star rating is for all the 6th graders out there. I appreciated so many elements of this book for tweens - healthy communication, STEM focus, female mentorship, introduction to a lot of Jane Austen character names, for starters.
When I first started reading this book, I expected more direct Austen comparisons and I expected to like it as an adult. It was way too simplified and tweeny for me, and the author wasn't trying to duplicate an Austen novel. But when I started to appreciate the story for a younger audience, I really began to love how there is so much positive role modeling in this book.
I wouldn't run out and tell all my friends to read this book, but I might recommend it to a middle schooler.

This book wasn't perfect for me but I can appreciate it. It didn't try to mimic Pride and Prejudice too much, but enough to give some parallels. The character and their interests are quite fun and add to the narrative. This was a very quick read for me, I read it mostly while waiting in the car and on the way to my co-op. It thankfully distracted me, but I don't know that it was worth the motion sickness.
Enjoyable if you want a light middle-grade novel with some substance. There are great quirky characters!

A middle-grade novel with well placed Jane Austen characters and references and a dad who loves plankton and climate change research, pretty much the perfect book for me.
This was such a cute middle grade with likable characters and of course a Jane Austen thread running through it all. Perfect for any young aspiring writer.
