This was an excellent telling of Emily Roebling's incredible story. I first learned of her while watching The Gilded Age, and was curious to learn more. This novel certainly satisfied my curiosity. Now I want to visit the Brooklyn Bridge!

Have you ever been in a situation where you randomly pick up a book and give it a chance? Well that was me with this one and I'm so happy I did. As a historical fiction junkie this took me back to the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the amazing woman who was instrumental in the success of the bridge. There were a few slow parts and details about bridge building that may not be for everyone.

While an interesting topic, the book lost me when PT and Emily kissed.

This historical fiction book meets some of my criteria for good historical fiction: an interesting story about a subject that I wasn’t familiar with including some strong characters, especially female ones.

There’s a big HOWEVER: because the author fictionalized a story between two characters (one of whom is a well-known historical figure) that she admitted in the acknowledgements was not true. I couldn’t get past that. To go into more detail would be to give away some spoilers, so I won’t but you’ve been warned. Might want to check out the notes at the end first.

When you go back into history to read the stories they almost always focus on the men, so how refreshing to find a story where a woman can take center stage and who did and with her taking the lead something big happened - a bridge! Did you ever wonder how the Brooklyn Bridge came to be? Did you think that it was ahead of its time and an engineering feat of its time?!

I guess I had never really thought about bridges in general and never the hows behind the Brooklyn Bridge and how it came to be. Emily Warren Roebling married and dropped everything to follow her husband as he pursued the family business and his dream - building bridges. Watching her husband and her father-in-law, build a bridge or two, Emily learned a lot of things and when her husband needed her to take the lead she did and she not only innovated, but fought the authority along the way.
