4.5 stars. This was like reading a true crime podcast. Fascinating, sure to leave you with some unanswered questions. For a book that reveals the victim and the murderers very early on, it does a great job keeping the reader interested. Besides, look no further than the quote below to see how amazing the prose is:

"She only took the time necessary to say the name. She looked for it in the shadows, she found it at first sight among the many, many easily confused names from this world and the other, and she nailed it to the wall with her well-aimed dart, like a butterfly with no will whose sentence has always been written.
'Santiago Nasar,' she said."

This book was very intriguing. I think it’s one that gets better with each reread. I found it difficult to follow who was being referred to and just generally track the names of everybody. I thought the plot was very engaging and an interesting perspective but I wish there was answers to some of the hanging questions.

there is so much melodrama suffused within every page that I was caught off-guard by the surprising splotch of romance that made itself apparent near the end of this book. moral paralysis is something I see every day in the country I live in, and to see it played out to such heights was kind of horrific as well as cathartic, in a weird way. I don’t like Santiago Nasar, but his final scene in the final few pages of the book was weirdly beautiful - and sad - to me. maybe nothing will ever stop the bad thing coming to get you, and maybe it is true that sometimes all anyone can do is watch quietly. there was no honour for the man who died, no honour for the woman scorned, and yet. I suppose all you can do is pick up the pieces, keep your insides inside as much as possible, and carry on until you find a place good enough to die.

Once again, a great book by Márquez. This novella is not as humorous as his other novels I've read (like One Hundred Years of Solitude) but its topic isn't very funny anyway. I liked the way that the tension rose, even when you knew the outcome (see the title). It didn't grip me as much as the other things I've read by him, but it was really good nonetheless!

Me gusta el concepto, muy costumbrista, oscuro pero bien
