A great read. Truly. Beautiful language that unfolds a terrible tragedy. I was completely hooked.

i read this for the first time my sophomore (?) year of high school and i’ve long said it was one of my favorite books i’ve ever read in school. i found it fascinating, and for a bunch of 15 year olds i remember having some pretty interesting conversations in class. but i’m 28 and high school was forever ago, so i decided to reread and i loved it just as much the second time.
the plot is just… so well executed (no pun intended). you know exactly what’s happening the entire 120 pages, and yet i was still completely hooked the entire time. it’s so like, sociologically interesting!! the whole town knows exactly what is about to happen to santiago, and still no one stops it. the few people who try fail and everyone has their excuses and i feel like it’s such a good snapshot of what happens when there’s an easily avoidable tragedy and it’s so compelling. i love that the description of the weather is constantly changing given who the narrator is talking to - it’s a good reminder that the people he’s hearing from aren’t reliable narrators, that it’s been several years, that it’s spun up into something almost mythological.
i love gabriel garcia marquez’s other works too, but there’s something about chronicle that just stuck with me, and it will continue to do so.

My first Spanish book of 2025! It’s been probably a decade since I read a book in Spanish. It was surprisingly difficult to read, and I’m not sure if it’s because I chose a classic and an author like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or because my Spanish needs work. Maybe a combination of both? Either way, this was an interesting story. The concept of chronicling a death was very interesting and I think this book painting a very vivid picture of this town and the time in which it was set. The writing was beautiful and descriptive, although if I’m being honest it made it a bit difficult to read in Spanish. I’m sure I had read this in English I would have loved it.
