This was my first book by Gabriel García Márquez. It was like nothing I've ever read before. When I finished reading it I felt like I was in a different place than when I started. I went out on the streets around my house shortly after and noticed several things which have changed in small ways. This contributed to my feeling of being in a sort of alternate reality. At the time, the story felt more real than reality itself. I had all this insight into it and I was under the impression that my observation abilities have heightened. I loved it.

sinceramente me re gustó

"It was very easy," she told me, "because I'd made up my mind to die."

This book was quite unsettling. How could everyone know that a man was to be killed but nothing was done to stop it? And tbh it's an excruciatingly boring read.

Completely amazing, Gabriel García Marquez is a king of the written metaphor.

Great pacing and some stunning writing, but I hate the way women are written here. They are forever side characters, and I feel like their role as possessions and objects is a bit disappointing. Even if the novella is set in a certain era, you can still give the women personalities. I feel like I understood more about one of the characters’ STI than I did about the main female character. I also didn’t feel like there was much character development at all, so I didn’t really care about any of them beyond feeling disgust at some of the graphic descriptions. It was gripping though, and I think it was impressive that there was so much suspense despite knowing the outcome from the start. I also really enjoyed how many opportunities were missed to prevent the murder - frustrating and a really cool premise.

Continues to be one of my fave authors.

2nd Reading
Death of Nasar by brothers who felt their sister (Angela Vicario) was wronged before her wedding to a man she didn't love. Nasar stabbed and then body mutilated by town - though all outline their excuses as to why they knew but didn't stop the killing or mutilation. This is evil with good intentions, how an entire village can conspire to wipe out a single life and not think they'd done anything wrong. The brothers are even lauded for their action to defend the honor of their sister even though there is a suggestion they killed the wrong man. Nasar dies, then, for no reason. The killers kill the wrong man. The village commits the unspeakable for almost comedic reasons, and live in its wake. This is the fantastic turned upside down.

Details are peculiar and specific - he presses reason in each sentence with each characteristic habit that results in unexpected, unlikely results. There are reasons for things that happen but they are both reasonable and unreasonable - or reasonable in their specificity but unreasonable in their global effect on the town, its people, the murdered man.
