Shadow Study

3.96 AVERAGE

It has been years since I read the Poison Study trilogy. I remember that I really enjoyed the 1st book and then 2nd and 3rd were ok but they lost my interest a bit in the end. Then recently I saw a book on Netgalley and it was called Night Study and so I requested it thinking it was the next book in the series - turns out I missed one, Shadow Study. So I got this book on Audible.

If you have not read the Study series in a while, I would suggest a re-read before this book. I was pretty lost for the first few chapters. The book follows Yelena, Valek and Janco and we get chapters from all these points of view. In the beginning of the book we get some romantic time with Yelena and Valek. Yelena is then attacked and Valek goes back to work to find out who might be behind it. We then follow Yelena as her situation becomes more dire. When we follow Janco, it is while he is on duty.

These books have a lot of politics in them, that is why I recommend reading the other ones again - it was hard for me to remember which city was which and the backstories surrounding what happened to Yelena and Valek before this point. What I liked though was that we get a good amount of Valek's backstory in this book and I love how in love with Yelena he is.

The plot was an interesting one, like a mystery, trying to find out who attacked Yelena and why she is having more issues - I won't say much more though because I don't want to spoil it for new readers.

I am very ready to jump right into the next book though because there was an amazing ending and I can't wait to read on in the series. If you liked the Study series, this continuation offer more but also in more of an adult fee

I just love reading about Yelena and Valek. And the addition of Janco chapters makes things even better! My favorite part of this book was Valek's back story for sure. We get a great insight to how he become who he is and became known as the King Killer. I noticed a lot of people were surprised by the ending, but I definitely called that big reveal early on in the book.

3.5

You know those friends that you run into after a few years and it feels like no time has passed? That's what picking up this book was like. Oh, how I enjoyed being back in this world!!

Other than a couple of issues I loved this book. It's full of action, adventure, kick-ass characters, love and friendship.

My only issues were these:
1. I haven't read the Glass series in quite a while so I had forgotten a lot of details. There were quite a few characters and plot points that were involved in this book. I don't think you need to reread the Glass books before reading this though. I was able to piece together the forgotten plot details.

2. I'm pretty sure I've complained about this in all of Maria's books. Her main characters never spend enough time together. Just as I wanted Kerrick and Avry to spend more of the Healer books together, I want more interaction with Yelena and Valek. I know that part of the point is that they are capable of taking care of themselves but I love it when they are together. I'm hoping with where this book left off that we will get more of them together in the next book.

Even with those little hiccups, I'm so glad that Maria decided to continue this series. It's one of my all time favorites!!

this was probably my least favorite of the series so far.

what i did like: getting to hear more about valek’s past and
the setup for the commander becoming the villain of the series!!!!

what i disliked: most of the action was told instead of shown. there were too many povs which slowed down the story

I was really surprised to see this had come out. I haven't managed to read the intervening Glass series yet, so I didn't know some of the characters (or backstory) as well as I could have, but I do really enjoy Valek and his sidekicks, and some of the other characters (more than Yelena, really) and the plot is interesting enough that I'll keep going with the series.

Yelena's pregnant?!?! O.O

I liked this continuation of the study series. I didn't even really mind the multiple POVs' like I normally do.

I am very disappointed in the Commander!!!! He was always a bit stiff when it came to magic to go this far?!

-.-
