A mixed bag, I only really liked 2 of these stories...

Alright, so Murder in the Mews is a collection of four short stories featuring Hercule Poirot, and I’m just going to say it upfront: I’m more of a “full-length Hercule Poirot” kind of person. Short stories? Eh, not my jam. But, surprise surprise, this one was... okay.

Let’s break it down: the four tales—Murder in the Mews, The Incredible Theft, Dead Man’s Mirror, and Triangle in Rhodes—have some intriguing vibes. You’ve got everything from murder and robbery to suicide and love triangles. So, on paper, it’s a mixed bag of mystery goodness.

Now, the stories had their moments. Two of them stood out to me, almost begging to be expanded into full-length novels. They had that atmosphere that makes you wish there was more to uncover, more twists to unravel. But then, the other two stories? They were more like quick appetizers that left me wanting a main course. Particularly the last one—Triangle in Rhodes—which just felt rushed and unsatisfying. I mean, Hercule Poirot solves the whole thing in like, what, five minutes? No thinking, no investigation, just a quick “I know who did it” moment. And I’m sitting here like, “Uh, did I miss something? Was I supposed to be impressed?”

So, yeah, while the stories themselves aren’t bad, they just don’t live up to the Hercule Poirot magic we know and love. It’s like getting a mini scoop of ice cream when you wanted the whole sundae. Still, if you’re craving a quick mystery fix and want to see Hercule Poirot in action (even if it’s a bit more autopilot), this collection will do the trick. But if you’re looking for a meaty, complex case to sink your teeth into... you might want to look elsewhere.

Four short stories all featuring Poirot and murder. All fabulously clever and sometimes laugh out loud funny as is all Christie. Classic Christie.
