I wanted to like this book, but it was underwhelming in character development, plot, and pacing. The story felt rushed and underdeveloped. With four characters, each with their own complex story, it really needed to be a much longer book or a series.

I always enjoy books about librarians, libraries, and bookstore. I am often adding books referenced in the story to my book list. π
As I read this book, I found myself identifying with the characters, whether it was their flaws or the love for books and friendship. The author didn't hesitate to write about tough situations, all while bringing you back to real love and relationships. We will all face adversity, however it is how we deal with it. Will we fold or retreat? Or will we lean into those friendships and relationships that will get us through.

Four thirty-something friends are determined to open a bookshop celebrating their 15- year "sisterhood", giving a voice to marginalized populations, and sharing their love of books. Each of these four beautiful "sisters", Celeste, Leslie, Yasmeen, and Toni, each face a major crisis or two in their lives which threaten them and their friendship suffers from collateral damages.
To say "The Bookshop Sisterhood" is packed with drama is an understatement. At times, I did not want to read the next chapter because it was an intense read. Michelle Lindo-Rice delves deeply into the themes of friendship, trust, love, healthy and unhealthy relationships, confidence, and perseverance in high drama manner. There were a few times when I thought there could not be any more twists or turns, but turn the page and here we go again! That said, if you want a book that makes you laugh, cry, get angry, and feel over-the-top elated all within a few pages, you'll enjoy reading about the sisterhood.

Though published by Harlequin, this book reads more as a women's fiction rather than a romance. It features the lives of four book loving friends who support and conflict with each other. I would highly suggest this book for a book club selection.

This book was like picking up an episode of girlfriends. We are introduced to 4 best friends who all have their own things going on and the one constant is their book club. They are in the process of opening a bookstore and we are taken on a wild ride with them through the process. I will say this book is a bit predictable once we get to the end, but itβs really nice to get to know these women and understand their friendship. I would recommend this fun read.

Very hard read but I continued anyway. There was just no chemistry between the four friends and they had so much going on.

Ever heard the phrase it's a dog eat dog world and you're wearing meat shorts? That's what's going on for this cast of characters. Yasmeen starts at a low point and suddenly experiences a tremendous windfall that is making her a touch reckless (I connect most to Yasmeen on several levels). Toni seems to have everything going just right in her life, but she's holding back the skeletons in her closet. Celeste seems to have a fantastic relationship with her husband, but she can't deal with her trauma from being robbed. Leslie has a good life, but gets blindsided by family secrets.
I found myself getting frustrated with all the characters at some point, but I was perturbed by Leslie and Celeste the most.
Leslie by far frustrated me the most because she seemed to lack sympathy for her family secret coming to light. I am an adopted child, but I was adopted later in my life vs adopted from birth. I understand the frustration, but her icing out the one parent that worked hard and gave her a great life ticked me off. Her meeting her birth parents and holding such harsh judgement for them knowing she had a good life and didn't have to grow up in a broken home also ticked me off. Celeste wasn't the only character that needed to be in therapy to work through her struggles; Leslie should also be in therapy to deal with her having a child with cancer and to work through finding out she's adopted.
π There are romantic plot driving the characters on their day to day life, but it's not the sole focus of their stories. They all have drama and most have some heat in their significant other relationships, but if you're looking for explicit; look elsewhere.
Spice Scale
γ°οΈ No romantic plot
π€A dash of romantic plot is there, but mostly handholding. The romance in the title is a blip
π©ΆA romantic plot is present, but doesn't get past kisses and hugs.
π There is some light spice, but closed door
𧑠There are mildly descriptive spicy scenes, but they are finished very quickly and could be easily skipped over.
π€ Spice is present, very descriptive, but doesn't overwhelm the plot.
π©· There is a plot, but there are quite a lot of descriptive spicy scenes that are different encounters that span back to back chapters (chapter changes that are just POVchanges do not count).
π Plot? There's just enough to get to the next round of spicy times.
