SUCH A GOOD BOOK!!!!! Coup de coeur immense omg. ❤️ Can I read it again for the first time?

So many tough things that happen throughout the story, and Daunis overcomes so much. It's amazing. Angeline Boulley did a really great job of introducing readers to Ojibwe culture and Anishinaabemowin words in a very organic and natural way. Everything about the book sticks with me. It was sad. It was beautiful. I loved every part of it.

"There is healing medicine in those kisses" (465)
"Wiijiindiwi: when you no longer walk alone on your path but are together for the journey on this earth" (138)
"Ninde gidayan: you have my heart" (36)

4.5 stars! I enjoyed this! What a great opportunity to learn about Native culture and for a YA, this felt more mature. I enjoyed the protagonist a lot and loved how immersive the story was. The pacing felt slow at times and some of the plot twists were a little unbelievable but overall, it was enjoyable and educational and a propulsive read. Would recommend and excited to discuss it at book club!

The overall story was intriguing but took much too long to get to the plot points.

I love this book. It's enticing and fun, while being inspiring and informative. The storyline is so well done, the layers of teh story and characters is great. I cannot recommend this book enough, it's a new classic.

I don’t know why this is considered YA. I would be hesitant to give it to anyone under 16. Check CWs throughly. That said,

This book (and the audiobook narration) was great. The look into life on the reservation, good and bad, was well done. It’s about drugs in the indigenous community but nothing is black and white. Talented writing and characters with solid motivations and believable flaws.
