4⭐️/4🌶️
What a great surprise! It started off fast paced and intense, and quickly the world building begins with the political set up etc. I felt like it was going to be very predictable, but then the things I felt were predictable kind of happened and resolved more quickly than anticipated, leaving me with a major twist at the end that I did NOT see coming, which was a pleasant surprise! I think without the strong ending I would have rated it lower, but she sealed it as a 4⭐️ for me in the last 50 pages for sure! The spice was spicing, not in quantity, but in the type of risqué spice that’s a little more than I’m used to - so I gave it 4🌶️ imo!

I met this author at my local B&N and hadn’t heard of these books prior, but decided to pick them up because I could just see how her entire face lit up when talking about them, and they fall in my favorite genre.
She told me that the books are forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and forced captive which are all of my favorite tropes in one. All of that to say, I loved this book! Sin reminded me of all of my favorite dark and misunderstood MMC’s, and Wren is just a ticking time bomb waiting to unleash her full potential. Her ferocity towards protecting the ones she loves is so evident throughout the first book, and I’m excited to see the lengths she will go to in the second to keep them safe from the impending war.
My only critique for this book would be that it mixes more modern language with older often, and it can be a bit jarring to switch back and forth and doesn’t blend as well. I think it would have been less of a contrast if she continued to use more modern language throughout instead of saying fortnight sometimes, and a few pages later speaking of weeks.

I love the back and forth banter between Sin and Wren but I'm on Wren's side, what he did was despicable.

3.5 rounded up
What I liked:
The magic system is different, and the world building is interesting. The MCs are complicated and engaging. I needed to keep reading because I had to know where things were going. You *knew* a twist was coming...
What I had issues with:
Some of the phrasing is a little clunky, and she kept referring to liquid or juices instead of blood. Maybe for variety, I don't know? Early on, things happened a little too quickly, and decisions the MCs made didn't exactly make sense based on what we knew about them.
If you're looking for spice, this is a sloooooow burn enemies to lovers to ?
I'm invested enough to read the next book. Hopefully, it's a true 4 ⭐️
