I could probably bump off one star since I had a great deal of dislike for the dialogue—did this rival Lucas himself in bad dialogue?—but I won’t because it was good anyway. The plot was absolutely spectacular. Seeing Kanan as such a mess here really causes one to appreciate how much he had changed by the time of Rebels. I saw Vidian as a foil to Vader (of course their circumstances were completely different, but the surface of their characters were similar), which was interesting. Also, this wasn’t a rebellion against the empire, it wasn’t a big deal. It was merely making life a bit safer and easier for the people living under the empire. Which, of course, is what the Ghost crew continues to do in the first seasons of Rebels (before they formally join the alliance). Anyway yeah I dig it.

Edit: I just read some other reviews praising the dialogue. My opinions still stand however. Ha ha ha.

Kanan, proves some problems can't be solved with a lightsaber.

Around our house it is all star wars all the time and my boys seem to know all sorts of details. So when I saw this book I was intrigued. We enjoy the show featuring the two main characters, Kanan and Hera. And the book was faithful to their voices. It was a well executed science fiction book that had it not been Star Wards, would have been delightful on its own.

John Jackson Miller has a certain tone of writing style that just….fits in the Star Wars universe so seamlessly and uniquely. This one is for anyone who fell in love the characters of the Rebels animated show. It’s the story of how Kanan and Hera met and how Hera convinced Kanan to be…well, Kanan. It’s beautiful and full of crazy stunts and adventures and blaster fights and bar fights and there’s something just so quintessentially Star Wars about this book that I can’t get enough of.
