If you like the show Star Wars Rebels, this book reads just like an extended episode of the show. An okay episode, at that. The story is decent and serves its purpose of showing how Kanan and Hera met. My biggest issue with this book is the villain. It felt to me like Miller tried too hard to make Count Vidian an obvious stand in for Darth Vader.

3.5/5
veryyy slow in the beginning. finally picks up around pg 100 or so, and decent action writing when we got to that. took a while but i came to care about the secondary heroes, and of course loved this prequel to kanan & hera's space marriage in rebels. both of them felt pretty true to their characters in the show & i especially loved kanan's immediate ride or die energy for hera. i was holding out for kanan's big jedi reveal moment, which turned out to be more of a quiet, almost humorous reveal—i think i loved it more than a big reveal, however bad ass a big moment would've been, though i would've liked it more i think had i not been expecting a lightsaber moment. the ending after all of that also felt a bit abrupt, though satisfying. i would've liked some of kanan's thoughts on hera knowing he's force sensitive, but the end was still very warm and hopeful and exactly what i'd want for them

If you are a fan of the show Rebels this is a must read.
I have no patience for mediocre books this year.
