This was actually my second time around for this book, and I enjoyed it even more this time. With three seasons of Rebels around to put it into context, everything holds a little bit more weight, whereas the first time I read it I had just gotten into Rebels, so the characters hadn't stuck with me yet. Also I think I'm a Kanera shipper now?

hera: mh he is a useful jedi

I found this book to be incredibly slow with so many details I was bored. The story would progress and feel as if the plot had gone nowhere. Reading Kanaan  and Hera’s origin is somewhat fun but definitely left me wanting more from the book.

If like me you enjoy Star Wars Rebels this book is great for you. As this is a prequel to the Star Wars Rebels TV series I wasn't expecting much from it. It was disappointing that the book didn't give much by way of backstory for Kanan and Hera but rather chose to focus on their first encounter and how they became the leaders of the Ghost crew we know and love today. The book itself is PG in that it's not difficult reading and doesn't include any adult themes, which was perfectly fine with me. Again, this is a prequel to a children's tv show. My one complaint would be that the characters didn't quite behave the same as their TV personas, they felt very different. I suspect some of that was part of character development for them to grow into their respective roles on Ghost and towards the end of the story we see Kanan began to embrace the Jedi hero we now know him as after 3 seasons of Star Wars Rebels. It's not necessary to read the book in order to get into Rebels, but if you enjoy all things Star Wars it's a good solid read.

So this book provides some much-needed backstory for how Kanan and Hera meet, where like Han Solo Kanan gets mixed into this rebellion. Honestly seeing how he used to be to what we see in rebels is a big change but a needed one. Also, the plot was simple enough to follow getting rebellion POV and the empire one. Talking about the Empire we see Rae Slonea the main villain later on in the aftermath trilogy and seeing her character progression was nice. Over all, I liked this book but that is all, I liked it but it didn't blow me away like Jackson's other book lost tribe of the sith or Kenobi but I do recommend this to the rebel fans and any other fan that wants to read this book.

The reason I was mostly interested in choosing this book next in my adventures of getting caught up with the new Star Wars canon, was because of the release of the new Rebels midseason (two) trailer. I hadn't gotten to Rebels yet (I was still watching The Clone Wars at the time), but I got intrigued by this book mostly because this is set a few years before the TV show.

All in all, this was a fun read. It helps that I'm already interested in Rebels, because I'm not sure how interesting these characters would be if it wasn't for that.
At times, the book felt like a chore to read and I was reading more for the sake of finishing it. Not that I disliked it per se, but it didn't excite me all that much.

However, in the back of my mind I had already known this but for some reason I had forgotten, I was incredibly excited to see Rae Sloane turn up again. She was arguably one of the more interesting characters of the Aftermath novel by Chuck Wendig, and I love getting to know more about her. I also found Count Vidian an interesting adversary.

I recommend this one if you're a fan of Rebels and are interested in how Kanan and Hera met eachother, or if you want just a bit more Rae Sloane after Aftermath, or even if you want to read about a new villain. Though overall I do not consider this a must read.

I am getting ready for the Journey to the Force Awakens…

The book was good, but not great. I have already seen Rebels Season One…so it was good to get the back story. Looking to read more. I think The Lords of Sith is next.

4.5/5 I will read anything involving Hera Syndulla, and this book had a lot of her. The story follows Kanan Jarrus as he meets Hera for the first time. It’s a fun Star Wars story
