Omg this book was incredibly frustrating and I continuously wanted to throw it across the room (which I think is the intention so I guess it’s successful). It also forced me to research the political history of Italy in the 20th century. So I guess I’m learning a lot. But oh man am I frustrated.
It's insane how many callbacks Ferrante references from the most obscure lines of the first book, the second. Unspoken as well. She unearths a plethora of parallels with a subtlety that you'll have to dissect through otherwise you'll miss them, and they'll stay buried in your subconscious. It makes me feel like I'll keep missing masterful details until I reread, and then reread again. It's a good thing I'm consuming these books like they're comics (her writing holds you at gunpoint).

a slow but captivating read. the world of lila and elena expands, and more complex themes filter into their lives. at times, ferrante's network of ideas/characters/conflicts felt overgrown, though, which made it difficult to engage and become invested in a strand of critique, and i miss the almost claustrophobic fixation on lila and elena that characterized much of the earlier books. this feels intentional, though — while the collision of feminism, class struggle, technology, etc. with identity and relationships felt overwhelming to me as a reader sometimes, it also kinda feels like the point of the novels.
anyways, i would follow lila and elena anywhere and am immediately picking up the fourth book.

the parallels between lila’s growth into adulthood and elena’s grappling with adulthood are too close, too convoluted. for her to leave him for ~ that man ~. the fourth book will only wreak heaven and hell all in one all at once. pray for me
