This one took me a while- the concept was great but very anticlimactic in the execution

Brilliant storytelling, wonderfully atmospheric, a very likeable protagonist and a great ending. What’s not to love!

An entertaining ghost story that evolves into surprising turns with its antagonists, adding a bit more punch than your average haunting.

The Plague Stones is a story of ghosts, family, and loyalty. After their 14-year-old son Toby is the victim of a violent break in, in their small rented flat. Trish and Peter accept the offer that no-one could refuse: a mortgage free beautiful home with a huge garden, all set within a village, a close community, and a position as one of the village's trustees. All inherited from a very distant aunt Trish barely remembers. It all seems too impossibly good to be true. From the very first night in the house, Toby realises that there is more to this house than he ever could have imagined!

A tale of horror, history and folklore that has you completely gripped from the first page; the author immerses you in a world where the black plague seems incredibly real, and anything is possible.

Each character is written so well that you cannot help becoming emotionally invested in each of them. The author has made this story so captivating, tense and thought-provoking, that I found it almost impossible to put down.

However, I have rated this book 4 stars. Even though the ending was good and thought provoking especially about current circumstances and coincidences that is going on in present day, I felt that I wanted to know more about the family.

This is the first James Brogden book that I have read, and I will definitely be adding more of his books to my book collection after enjoying The Plague Stones so much!

This was such a deliciously dark, sinister and vividly gory book. I love folk stories about Plague (Kuma Kuga in Croatian folk) so this is definitely my type of book. Especially since this is not a historical story like the Goodreads shelves would make you think, but actually a modern version of the tale. It also hits a bit differently when you read it during a pandemic.

The characters are also interesting in the way that they know what's happening, but are still mostly inefectual to actually do something. It also reminded me a bit of Jaws, except instead of shark, there's a creepy reveng seeking ghost girl.

I was also mostly rooting for the creepy ghost girl, because I'm like that.

Well, I was hooked on this book from the moment I picked it up. The amount of plot twists made me dizzy but satisfied. This was a story built perfectly around suspense and horror and JB delivered beautifully. We meet Toby, Trish and Peter who are dubiously brought in to a situation that’s, messed up to say the least. Dark and twisty paths lay ahead with The Trust, and Her. I still don’t know how to feel about Nash, is he a hero we don’t understand, martyr, or just a basic human blinded by greed? Some of his dealings are left unresolved but maybe they weren’t necessarily part of the main story but simply necessary catalysts? I wish we would have had a small bit of an answer either way. I think the ending, for the type of story this was, was perfectly chosen. I am almost hopeful that this won’t be the last time we hear of Pesta. I feel like she’s not done brooming or raking about just yet.

A thoroughly enjoyable folk-horror that doesn't take itself too seriously. Full of relatable and likeable characters, as well as those kinds of characters that you love to hate, I think this is up there with one of the most enjoyable horrors I've read in a long time.

Now here is a story that I could easily visualise as a movie! A magnificent read - a very different kind of tale, though there were clues every now and then about Nash being a villain. And I think this was the perfect read for Halloween 2019.
