Jude the Obscure

Thomas Hardy

3.7 AVERAGE

I bought a trio of Hardy’s work after seeing a video review about the film adaptation of this book over a year ago. I only just decided to read it recently and I could not believe how captivating this story was. The relentless punishment Jude and Sue seem to suffer at the hands of others, themselves and seemingly of fate is incredibly tragic. It seems like just when things seem like they couldn’t possibly get any worse, Hardy is on a mission to prove they can. A great read, truly spectacular storytelling.

i originally had in mind an incredibly unserious review and then it got So sad i had to make an attempt at a serious one but ultimately i just have to speak my truth which is that jude and sue were so right about being ahead of their time and had they lived in ours they would have been autistic lesbians which makes their tragedy all the more heartbreaking. we live in a society but at least it's not 1890s england. the sleeves may have fucked but god forbid their wearers did

I read this myself, outside of class and for no real reason. It was a challenge that I don't think I would undertake again.

"All is trouble, adversity and suffering!"

This was an excellent read, but one of the most horrifically tragic books, too. So sad.

This took me forever because I read most of it in French, then abandoned it because the ending was too sad, then came back to it by reading the rest of it in English at the library. Still have to finish Tess of the D'Urbervilles too but I left my copy at home and it's checked out at the library which for some reason only has one copy? Anyway sorry I keep rambling. This is a good book when Sue is not in it but unfortunately she's in it a lot. D.H. Lawrence has an interesting study about her and how she's a sort of succubus but it still didn't make me like her any more.
