There were some parts I enjoyed but also a lot of parts where I wished I could strangle Tolstoy. I'm sure he also wished he could strangle himself.
Graphic: Suicidal thoughts, Suicide

I really enjoyed this, more than I remembered or expected on this reread. I did find the pastoral scenes long and they didn't move me much, but I also know they served a purpose in the overall story. The political parts of the book were lost on me because I don't know the history, however again I do believe it served the story if you have that knowledge. For how long this is, I never felt bored. I enjoyed the contrasts in the characters stories even if none of them were particularly likeable. I think Anna's story is one that needed to go deeper. I think there is post partum depression, maybe even major depression, and I believe a drug addiction. That made me more sympathetic to her in the end, which if you haven't felt those things makes her just unlikeable. I do also think the exploration of cheating in a relationship is timeless and to see the parallels here and modern tellings is interesting and why it's a classic.

Ok, I don't know if I can say that I 'read' this book, since I definitely did not finish it. But, I did attempt to read it in it's entirety and I could have finished it, if I chose to do so :-)

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. Yes, it’s long, but imo it’s only like 100 pages longer than needed, not the 500 I originally thought. Great Gatsby meets Les Miserables lowkey. There’s too many characters (do all the side characters really need names?), but it’s realistic. The author does a great job with making the characters painfully human.
Graphic: Death, Infidelity, Suicidal thoughts, Suicide, Suicide attempt
Moderate: Mental illness, Grief, Pregnancy
Minor: Drug use, Miscarriage, Sexism
Morphine used as a painkiller, MCD by suicide , lots of suicidal thinking by multiple characters

Much more modern than I would have thought. I LOVE Levin, he’s so incredibly relatable to me.
Ironically, the title character is the most annoying one too.

I found Anna Karenina a bit long-winded and heavy on the drama. The characters go through a lot of emotional turmoil, and at times it felt like it dragged on more than it needed to.
That said, I can still appreciate it for what it is: a deep and thoughtful novel, especially impressive for its time. The writing has moments of real insight, and the social commentary is interesting in context.
Overall, not quite my style, but I’m glad I read it.
